    2025 Pheasant Season out west/midwest

Just because Hwy 212 is a direct pipeline from that one place in Wisconsin that raises all 1 million flare nares that get released on SD public land.

    2025 Pheasant Season out west/midwest

I've seen a couple guys' dogs run into snares, so a pair of cable cutters might be a good idea if you aren't familiar with unsetting traps.

    Snowshoeing for pheasants?

I couldn't find the hard data, but this article alludes to PF Biologists noting it - https://www.startribune.com/pheasants-winter-segregation-and-bar-maidens/83480632 I've personally witnessed roosters pushing hens off of feed (around cattle feed bunks in tough winters). Now, with proper...

    Snowshoeing for pheasants?

Having compassion is good, but I sometimes think it's easy to have an anthropomorphic view of pheasants. They've survived a heck of a lot worse throughout the history of their species than a random brutal winter or bipedal hunters. Pheasants will ride out the tough times whether they are...

    2025 Pheasant Season out west/midwest

There are a few pheasants on public land in SD. I would be shocked if you couldn't find a hotel in December or January. The bulk of pheasant hunters are fair weather folks.

That's my story and I'm sticking to it!

I did once see a rooster hit a power line and die. Opening day, my dad was blocking and was just about to shoot when it occurred. Regardless, your buddy should at least buy you a new shotgun.

    Snowshoeing for pheasants?

I've worn snow shoes to get back into places to hunt, but took them off to hunt as walking through cattails in snow shoes isn't feasible.

    South Dakota Wetlands Protection

There was an article in the local paper penned by John Cooper, one of the good guys, IMO, regarding the reduction in wetlands and other factors involved in wildlife conservation. Hopefully you can read it and it isn't blocked behind a paywall -...

    Gregory

Yes, the blinders are there to prevent pecking, but the state requires preserves to have some sort of identifying feature on the birds they release -

    Gregory

Fortunately, SD requires released pheasants to be indicated by the flare nares or a clipped toe. MN doesn't require this, so you can probably assume that any pheasant you shoot either with or without the hole in the nose is a pen raised pseudorooster. ;)

    Gregory

If I were travelling to SD from MT for a DIY hunt, I wouldn't go to the Gregory area. 20 years ago, for sure. Then the CRP dwindled away at about the same time as all the preserves popped up and started dumping FN mud all over the place. There isn't much by way of public access out there...

Semi repost: what is everyone's layering system

T-shirt and hoodie sweatshirt for 30-45 temps T-shirt, long sleeved t-shirt and hoodie 15-30 T-shirt, base layer and hoodie for under 15 degrees. I'll also put on a pair of long johns at this stage.

I can never remember to post videos up on here.

    Let's talk cattail strategies

I don't hunt cattails, either. They just stand there and don't give a guy much of a challenge. Second, is it possible to hunt a plant? Seems like that would fall in the foraging category.

    Old school

Just be simply more bas@ss than others, make great shots, have an awesome dog, not partake in grabass metric. Heck, I consider myself a decent hunter, but I'm not in the same league as Goose.

    Getting permission

I love the AI renditions of Goose getting permission. Toss in a goofy nephew and a pile of mud nearby and I think we'll be all set. :)

    Thanksgiving Hunt

Sounds like a great trip! There are a few WPA's in the area I hunt that were plowed up and planted with corn this past year. I talked to a guy from USFWS and he said that putting the ground into crops is one of their tools to restore the grasses. They start by grazing or burning and when...

    Let's talk cattail strategies

As with all pheasant hunting, there are lots of variables to consider. My strategy for cattails is like my strategy for everything when it comes to finding pheasants - work edges/transition habitat and follow the dog when she goes into the cattails or when she darts out into the lighter grass...

    Golden Hour Hunting???

There are several reasons for the 12:00pm (now 10:00am) start time. Pheasant hunting used to be a big event for the entire communities in pheasant country. Starting at noon allowed farmers to get their chores done and not have to deal with guys asking permission, as well as allow them to join...

In your opinion, how many public land pheasants in the bag would make for a successful season?

The better question would be how many pheasants do you need to put in the vest for the season to be considered a success? I shoot enough birds to keep me and my dogs happy. Trying to put a metric on hunting is the antithesis of what it means to be a hunter. The way I see it is this: I shoot...
