Start of Minnesota 2025-2026 season countdown

I'm not sure if you meant this "during the deer firearms season" or outside of it. Rocking just an orange hat isn't legal during any deer firearms season. You need at least 50% orange above the waist. I have a friend who was verbally warned that his standard upland vest AND an orange hat...

Start of Minnesota 2025-2026 season countdown

Not gonna start a new thread about this but the state legislature made a big change to deer hunting this week that may affect hunters of birds here. The shotgun zone will be eliminated starting in 2026. The entire state will be open for rifles to hunt deer with a centerfire cartridge. There...

The hatch is happening in NW IA and replanting plots.

I'm not far from NW Iowa so the bird hatch will be soon here too. Rain would be welcomed, just not a flood.

    Constantly hungry

Yep, mine is a 4 legged garbage disposal. There is no end to the appetite, ever. Intake management and weight control is required on a daily basis.

Record birds 2024. I only read half the article

I agree. You could make the argument that its literally the only state in the country that prioritizes something other than big game as the primary management specialization. The deer is king almost everywhere else.

Looks like NRCS is going to have some major cuts.

This is is only a "proposed budget." Rarely does Congress pass such severe cuts to agencies and programs at once. However, you'd have to be nieve to think that there won't be at least some slashing of certain budgets coming. Its just a matter of how much.

Record birds 2024. I only read half the article

I exclusively hunt there and 2024 was the second best season I've had in 13 years (current dog). I missed my previous best which was in 2018 by 2 roosters. While I was turkey hunting in April, I saw a lot of pheasants. They would hang out right on the field with the turkeys and deer. I hunt...

    Rain Dance

Looks like a possible severe outbreak of weather next Monday. Very warm temps with a cold front sweeping in could create a squall line across South Dakota that heads eastward. The high on Monday where I am in MN is supposed to be 92 degrees.

    ND Fed Warden Jobs

I don't dispute that the benefits/retirement is probably better. Someone making double the 40k/year should be able to afford to retire at the same age if they invested and spent wisely though. 25 years of another 40k/year is a million dollars more over the course of that time period. So based...

Those are currently on the chopping block thanks to Congress. Won't be long and no one is gonna want to work there.

    Rain Dance

Pheasants haven't hatched yet. Way too early for that. Peak hatch is early to mid June. Not middle of May. I welcome the rain. It turns the landscape into lush greenery and there will be a good hatch of bugs coming. I got 3 inches this past week.

    Rain Dance

Another system may drop significant rain in the region today, tomorrow, and into Wed. They are predicting over 2 inches here in MN from this by Wednesday afternoon. It would be a slow, steady rain too which is the most ideal for the landscape.

    Rain Dance

Looks like a possible shift in pattern starting Thursday/Friday. The forecast I saw is predicting a couple of inches of rain for a sizable portion of central South Dakota.

    Rain Dance

Ah yes, the dreaded drought thread. It's dry in western MN too. Eastern half is in good shape, but the western portion needs it. And I'm seeing 90+ degrees for a few days early next week...

    Bird

Awesome. Once a guy gets the will power to knock on doors, it often opens up opportunities for years. My guess is that landowner is going to allow him back next season, and beyond, assuming he doesn't abuse it. Same concept can be applied pheasant hunting in the fall.

    Spring wild turkey

Unreal. Although I find it very difficult to think that a single pellet would be fatal for a turkey, it if was placed exactly in the head, it might work. Shameful.

    Spring wild turkey

After 3.5 days of hunting and over 90 turkeys later, I dusted this tom at 45 yards this morning around 8am. My patience finally paid off. He came in following 3 hens. The amount of wildlife I have seen in a few days is astonishing. Over 90 turkeys, about 25 deer, and too many pheasants to...

Start of Minnesota 2025-2026 season countdown

I have seen and heard a lot of pheasants the past couple days while turkey hunting, both roosters and hens. If we get some decent nesting/reproduction in June, this upcoming season will be just as good as last season, maybe even better. These mild snowless winters are probably causing little...
