    CRP in the upper Midwest

The attached graph shows the project decline in CRP acres in the Prairie Pothole Region states. These states also happen to have some of the best pheasant hunting (not all of it). My advise is that if you have been waiting to take your "dream trip" to one of these states, do it sooner rather...

Expiring CRP by County in MT

This is just the list of what is expiring, hopefully much of this will be "re-upped" or new acres enrolled (I can dream can't I )

    Ice fishing in spring weather...misc

I managed to get out and ice fish the last couple of days, nice to sit on the ice when it is 40 degrees (above :D). Caught some nice pike and watched 10s of thousands of Northern pintails, fly by headed north. The bummer was driving by 1000s of acres of CRP that has been plowed up, apparently...

    New Pheasant Recipe

This one is really simple. I bought some Kickin Chicken seasoning by Weber at Sam's Club. I think you can pick any seasoning or rub you like. Take a meat hammer and pound the breast flat, apply seasoning and grill. It doesn't take very long to cook on the grill. One night we ate to just one...

    Christmas Hunts/Stories Past or Present?

Ok, I am sitting around with family and friends enjoying the holiday (all good). I would love to hear that some of you were out this morning or are going out this afternoon, post some photos and tell some stories if you hunted today (or Christmas past hunts). Conditions are ideal around here...

There is still time and birds to be had...

Merry Christmas! There is still some time before the Pheasant Season is over and there are still birds out there. The last few hunts have been typical late season roosters, but if you stay with them it seems like you can kill a few.

    Huntin in the MT snow...

I thought I would post a few photos from today's hunt in the snow. Not tons of birds but I had a great hunt. I killed two roosters and cleaned up someone's crippled goose. This seems to happen about 50% of the time when I hunt along the river. I hate to leave cripples, even if they aren't...

One of many reasons I hunt in the snow

So, winter strom Brutus showed up yesterday in Montana (apparently the Weather Channel has taken to naming winter stroms now). I love to hunt in snow, so I left work early and managed to kill two roosters before dark. I woke up this morning to 12" of snow and still snowing with a temp of...

    Good start-happy dog

I would say the opening week was a little disappointing. We found birds but many were adults and many hunters were complaining about the lack of birds. Kind of surprising based on the forecast and reports from locals. However, having said that, it is the GREATEST time of year and there are...

    Snakes are still out...

I posted on the Montana section about rattlesnakes still being out but also saw that an Idaho dog got bit this week (see site below). Beware if you are in snake country. The dog is alive but the vet bill was $2000! http://www.facebook.com/#!/idahochukarfoundation It is suppose to get cold...

Snakes are still out - probably not a surprise to anyone

Just an FYI, while hunting huns last evening, the dog and I "met" a rattlesnake. Fortunately, the dog has a been to "snake school" (and/or luck), and no one was harmed. I saw a red-tail hawk carry one off the week before while driving to hunt. It has been smokey here for 6 weeks (at least)...

Happy Dog - another good day in the high country

Good year for mountain grouse. I could do without the smoke, but it does make for some good photo light. The entire hunt took about an hour, look for huns later in the morning with no luck, but still a very good day. :D

Nice morning in the high country of MT

I had a nice morning in the Montana high country hunting blue grouse. My shooting left a little to be desired but still managed to put two in vest. Fall color change is in full swing as you can see. :D

Only American to medal at 5 consecutive Olympics

http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/0/olympics/18904234 Female skeet shooter Kim Rhodes. She shoots 500-1000 shells during practice, each day! My shoulder hurts just thinking about that!

Big Sky Sporting Clays -Polson, MT

If you are near Polson, Montana and have some free time, Big Sky Sporting Clays is an awesome course. I have only shot it twice but was very impressed with the set up both times. The customer service is top notch. The have automatic thrower/controllers, that anyone can use (and you can do...

    Broods

I saw a brood of 12 huns today, and they were almost as large as the parents. I good sign in my book. I also saw a nice brood of ruffed grouse in the mountains the other day. I haven't seen a pheasant brood but that isn't uncommon for me this time of year. Oct will tell that story I...
