    Does Your Lawn Have Weeds...

Between round up, weed-B-gone and fertilizer I'm not worried that there are seeds landing in my yard.

    Storm in northern SD

Some rough storms jumping all around the eastern quarter of the state this afternoon and evening. Mostly east of the James river. Some with straight line winds and pretty good size hail. The rain is welcome. The rest, not so much.

"SD IS ENJOYING INCREASED PHEASANT ABUNDANCE!" (blaze orange, all caps, large font, GFP website...)

I always wave at those cameras hoping to make someone's day. Maybe you'll see my hand out the window someday. Ha.

    Opener Etiquette

I still go out for resident season. I have taken the regular season opener off for the last few seasons. Just too much of a hassle on public land anymore. Too many bad experiences with people pulling in five minutes before shooting time and thinking they can just go do what they want. Getting...

    Opener Etiquette

Having done the SD opener as a resident for the last 20+ years there is some etiquette. I usually arrive two hours early. If the spot is large enough there is most likely more than one parking spot. So expect others in the same field. If the spot has produced for others in the past they will...

    2021 RINGNECK OUTLOOK

You can't hunt all public ditches like during the normal season. So they guys who like to walk cover in ditches can't do that during resident season. Unless it is bordering a public hunting area.

    2021 RINGNECK OUTLOOK

Along with public land only comes no ditch hunting unless it is bordering public land. And only on that side of the road directly adjacent to it.

    2021 RINGNECK OUTLOOK

Resident only season but if you own your own land you can't even hunt it because for some dumb reason it is public land only? Like let's drive all the birds off public to the pay hunt outfits to help them out. I've asked folks working for GFP and they have to legit answer as to why. Probably...

    2021 RINGNECK OUTLOOK

I know they do mule deer and antelope collaring to study various things such as fawn survival rates and seasonal movements.

    Dog’s feet

My dog wears boots. I always carry an extra set for the inevitable when the fall off or wear out. Go through about one pair every season due to loss and wearing out. Never had to hunt her more than three days in a row. That was by myself for three days. So only needed nine birds.

    Cold rain

Been in Chamberlain the the last four days. Only one day did we have dew on the ground. Not a good sign. Grass and hills look very dry. Forecast doesn't look promising at all either.

Cool stuff you see while hunting...

We didn't do a lot of hunting on this trip, did manage to bag one turkey though. Took this last week while we were working on the ranch house where I deer hunt. Western SD.

    Albino pheasant?

I saw a rooster in the spring in a dirt field with about 20 other normal colored ones. This was 15 years ago when I was in college on Aberdeen. Hunted the area around that field hard that fall. Public land, ditches as many places I could leagally go. Never found him. A family friend has shot two...

Large heavy duty weather proof storage tote.

I have two Remington storage boxes I picked up at fleet farm. They latch down and are stackable.. Put them in the back of my truck and drove up and down gravel roads in snow. Never had anything get inside them. They were 35 or 40 dollars.

    daily bag limit for 2021?

It is. That only really changed the first week though. After the first week it was 10 am anyways.

    daily bag limit for 2021?

Pretty sure they canned that idea.

Tell me this isn't smokin' hot

I'm more of a fan of the build it and they will come model of wildlife. If the state would focus on increasing the population of pheasants. As well as increased accessibility. It wouldn't take a lot of money in advertising. Folks would know and hear from word of mouth that pheasants are up in SD.

Tell me this isn't smokin' hot

She supports the outdoors is the biggest joke I've heard. She supports the money behind it. The guides, the outfitters and the lodges for the financially well off. If you're a DIY and or public land hunter she gives thinks zero of you. Her 2 million spent on predator bounty program has produced...

    Types of cover

A number of the CREP areas can be fairly small in size and make it easier to corner a rooster with one person. Don't pass over the big areas as some of them are half mowed thus making them good places to trap a bird or two without an exit.
