    Quail hunt video

I took Ace and Indy out for a quail hunt this morning. Indy has really been running well and is getting on the birds before Ace most of the time. Wasn't real happy with Indy moving as I went in front to flush. Ace moves after Indy moves.... well got something work on in training.

    Pics on Quail

The wife and I went to look as some land we are thinking about. So we took the dogs and went for a walk. We found several coveys of quail. In one pic you can see the quail in front of Ace. This was the first covey Indy found, with Ace backing The birds were about 30 yards off Indy's nose...

Drought and reduced cover - Example

I got out today and hunted a spot that I have hunted for many years. I was shocked how short the grass was. So I took a picture in the same spot that I had taken one when Ace was a young pup. Three years ago. My son walking in on a covey of quail. This season, didn't see any bird in the...

    Opening Weekend

Well it is finally here. But it looks like it is going to be 78F here on Saturday  If it is that hot, I may skip Saturday, that is way to hot to be running my setters very long. May just wait until Sunday when it is going to be below 50. What are your plans.

    KU vs K-State game today

This is the first time in the last 3 years that the game has been in Manhattan. Charlie Wies (sp) has been talking some trash, so we will see what the score ends up.

    K-State Football - Fans

Well this is a much better start to the season this year. Last year stated with 2 close games, this year its two blowouts. But I think we have a harder road schedule than we had last season. We will see, but it is fun watching this team play,

    Question about dog box

I have a F150 super crew 4x4, that has a hard tonneuo (sp) cover on it. I need to get a 2 hole dog box that is big / deep enough to put 2 dogs in one hole if needed. Have any of you ever put a dog box in the back, and close a hard cover leaving the tailgate down. I am worried about exhaust...

    Duck hunting Setter ?

Well, Indy is always full of surprises. He likes to retrieve but was not wild about the water. Well he seems to think the water is OK now. Don't know that he will be spending much time in a duck blind. He was getting cold in 80* water :D No fat and little tight feet don't make the best...

Terminology in different areas of the country

One thing that I have noticed is that in different areas of the county some words and terms have different meaning. For example: Bird Dog where I have grown up means a pointing dog. Gun Dog would mean a flushing dog or retreiver. Bird hunting would mean upland birds. If you were hunting other...

    Meaningful debate

How about another dog/pheasant topic. What way do you think is the most effective way for a dog to hunt pheasants. Me being a pointing dog guy may have different likes an options than some of the flushing guys, but here goes. First off the pheasants need to be pointed. Birds that are not...

    Quail and Pheasants

It was great morning to run the dogs, 50F and wet. They were having a blast running in the cool temps. They both put down about 10 miles, at 11-12 mph. A lot better than when it is 70F. But there was some reason to feel positive about the upcoming season. i would say that I heard around a...

    Seeing some pheasants

Took the dogs out for a run this morning. It was pretty hot even before 10am. The dogs pointed 2 hens and a rooster, and had another 2 hens flush wild. This was in an area that I do not find many pheasants historically. Looks like there are plenty out there for a reasonable hatch...

    Cats another Top 10 win

How many of you watched the Cats play MU tonight. That was a big win, and a sweep of the Tigers on thier way out of the Big 12. So we knock off two top 10 teams (Baylor and Mizzu) on the road in back to back games. :D

    What to do now

What a bummer now that the season is over. Every weekend since the season opened I was out hunting with the dogs. They are a little beat up and need a few days to heal up, but not the 7 1/2 months to early Prairie Chicken season. :( Got to get some training done in the off season, but I sure...

Got invited to go hunting with some friends that I got my older setter Ace from. They brought Ace's mom Tinker and an old dog Lockie, that was also a pup from Tinker, who is 9 years old. My son and wife came along. It was the first time that my wife has ever gone out on a hunt. We took Ace...

    Where have the quail gone?

Have any of you found that the quail do not seem to be in their normal places. I have been to some of my best spots, that always have some quail. I know that they were there earlier in the year. They just haven't been there. Any ideas?

Pheasant strategies for solo pheasant hunts

Just interested to hear how some of you hunt pheasants when it is just one or two guys and a dog or two. What areas do you focus on, big areas, small ones. If it is a bigger area how do you attack it. I hunt buy myself a fair amount or with one or two other guys. I really don't care for the...
