    Central ND Broods

Good news! As you know Ihave hunted that area , I haven't talked to anybody yet where I usually hunt NE of there. How are the crops? Not just yours but in general? Think they will be mostly off by November 1?

    Hunting & Camping

Ive done the camp / hunt thing a few times , never in Kansas but in Wyoming and Montana. Most of the decent sized towns have some sort of little city park or camp ground that you can use. The set up and tear down process will get old quickly. Id rather set up on the ground somewhere and hunt a...

    Broods

If I were to guess the ones without broods lost them but too late to re-nest? Turkeys are like that here , you'll see hens without way more than hens with? Glad they are finally getting some moisture there , last year was the first time since 2007 I didnt hunt up there.

    Broods

Turkey poults have a similar life of a pheasant chick I would think. In college we learned that a hen turkey has between 12-15 eggs in a clutch (on average). If 3-5 make it to adulthood , its a success. More die in the nest due to predation and weather than die outside the egg. Id say those...

    It Looks Grim

Sad. Used to hunt around Stockton every year. The habitat there had declined steeply. Feel lucky I got in on some good days , 2008-12 were really good!!

    ND Info

Id go later . Its a world of difference when the majority of the crops are off. If it were me looking for huns and sharpies , id go west of Bismarck and north of I94.

    Cutting costs this year?

The lakes here are absolutely packed with boats every weekend. 50% of those people are from out of state. Marine fuel is $5.00 - $6.00 / gallon. I really dont think you will see much decline in the numbers of people out hunting due to fuel prices. May see some heavier truck pooling and some...

When do we start the push for change?

As a long time NR Kansas hunter (except for this year) , I have certainly seen the upland bird populations and quality public lands decline. I think my first year hunting Kansas was '07 or '08. The first 7 or so years were really good. Lots of the CRP and brushy draws we used to hunt are being...

    Southern DIY Quail Hunt

Snakes usually aren't an issue after November. That being said its certainly warmer here late in the year than it used to be.You might also consider hitting the North GA , East TN , and or Western NC mountains for ruffed grouse if you came this way.

    Southern DIY Quail Hunt

Definitely wait til after deer season. They usually hunt pretty hard down here til mid January. I have had success on public lands in the south but its thin. I have a friend who hunts some in SC , said it was decent. There are public land birds here in Tennessee. GA or FL would be my recommendation.

    North Central Kansas Advice

Have hunted KS a couple of times on opening day of deer season. No issues. We definitely try to avoid them if we see a truck parked where we want to hunt , mostly out of respect and not wanting to mess them up. We have had them stop and ask if they can set on the opposite side of a section while...

    DIY Late Season Hunt

Stayed in Lacrosse a few years ago. Found plenty of quail. Hunted extreme SW Nebraska this year. Pheasants were few and far between. Smith Center area might be good to base out of. Mixed bag possible there.

    Feral cats

Yea , So , I got my degree in Wildlife and Fisheries Biology in the early 2000's. We used to get a little extra credit to attend when masters and phd students would present or defend their Thesis and research projects. One of the ones I sat through was done on feral hose cats effects on...

Ahhh , makes sense. I guess I have seen those now , just didn't realize what I was looking at. Wish they'd go back to that method. Thanks for the lesson!

    Mid January '21 hunt

There are some pockets. We have had days where we killed a couple each. Never have seen those huge flushes much there but to be fair , Its just about always been late season.

    Mid January '21 hunt

Lots of WHIA in that area. Have hunted that general vicinity many times. Lots of CRP loss over the last decade. You'll find quail and the occasional group of chickens. Hunted in Stockton one year , had no idea it was gonna snow till we opened the motel door and there was 5'' pilled up next to...

Sir , just curious what you are referring to as a tailwater pit? Is this something to do with a center pivot?
