    Shed dogs ?

No, not sled dogs, but rather dogs trained to find antler sheds. Anyone ever around one ? See one work ? I’ve read about them and I think this time of year that would a great way to get some exercise and watch a dog work. Can they smell them for a distance like a bird dog ? Or do they have to...

    Goldador retriever wanted

This is always an interesting conversation. My training and experience is with breeding farm animals but, the principles are the same. Hundreds of traits, important and less so, are influenced by genetics and the environment the animal (or plant) is in. The combination of the two determines what...

    Goldador retriever wanted

Cross breeding throws everything in a cocked hat. Predictability disappears and outliers happen. I’ve seen some very good mixed breed dogs, but they don’t pass on their genetics reliably like a purebred.

    Goldador retriever wanted

An older lady here had a labradoodle. I got to spend a couple hours with it when it was young, man that dog learned fast. I taught him come, sit, stay, fetch in about an hour. I’ve often wondered what kind of field dog they would make.

    Any members from NW"ish" Iowa?

Too many crazies today, remember that one fellow a while back ? Seemed obsessed with finding out my location for some reason. I assume everyone is nuts ‘cept you and me, not so sure about you sometimes.

    Future of CRP ?

All Iowa drainage ditches I am familiar with are private, sometimes they are managed by the county, but the funds come from landowners only. Minnesota may be different.

    Future of CRP ?

Still private property though isn’t it ?

    Future of CRP ?

I believe the Iowa legislature has tried to limit the ability of the DNR to purchase land.

    Doing an inventory

Wanted to update the inventory for insurance purposes, make, model, serial number, condition, who it is supposed to go to, all that. It’s been a while. Made the mistake of letting the list lay on the kitchen table. “Is this a list of all the shotguns you have ??? !!!” Don’t be silly...

    Refinished my 720

The engraving on this is much deeper than any other I have seen. The metal wasn’t very pitted, just worn, and I told them I was willing to stand some blemishes for keeping the engraving sharp. I feel this is the nicest engraving I’ve seen in a common shotgun, much better than the model 11s...

    Refinished my 720

Thanks. No, the reblue was done by Simmons in Kansas City. It is a hobby of mine to take older shotguns and do some restoration on them. I just do the wood and recoil pads. I have two model 11s. Something about that humpback design that really puts me on the target. I don’t have an Auto-five...

    Refinished my 720

I’d have to look, mid 1940s if I remember correctly. The 720 is probably late 1930s, they didn’t keep track very well from what I understand.

Also did the wood on the 311A.

    Refinished my 720

Yeah, those folks back in today liked to use the dark stain. Take that off and the wood looks really nice.

    Game warden question

We tried the harnessing thing once, never really felt it. As for the warden, he has discretion, he used it. Totally proper.

    Sheriff called on me

The person acted properly in my opinion. Parking in the middle of that road is odd, I wouldn’t do it anyway, even with those roads there are usually places to pull off, or at least to the side. The vehicle was one they didn’t recognize. I’m not sure I would equate your first visit with a...

When was the golden age of pheasant hunting?

Dad talked about going out at night clubbing pheasants in the 1950s because they were digging up all the corn seed. Lots of oats raised in those days, that enabled pheasants and jack rabbits to raise young after seeding and before harvest. They shot jack rabbits by the pickup load, sold them...

    Merry Christmas

I hope the holiday season finds you all well and looking forward to a new year. Am I the only one who didn’t know the phrase “may you live in interesting times” is derogatory ? Here I’ve been using it wrong all these years.

    Future of CRP ?

I applied to put some more in this spring with the continuous sign up. We will see, I’m thinking the program is on thin ice.
