You never know what a season will bring

There's so much more to it than what I mentioned when it comes to bird numbers but it starts with habitat for the sake of the birds and hunting those birds.

You never know what a season will bring

My buddies and I have been going to SE South Dakota for the last 26 years. Have not missed a pheasant opener since 1997. There are six to eight private farms we have access to and have become very close friends with the owners and the community in general. We have hunted weather ranging from...

    Let's Bitch (Can't Hunt)

My bunch has been together for over 25 years and we still have guys that: 1. lane violate when shooting birds. If the bird is 20 corn rows over - don't shoot. Let that guy or a blocker closer to the bird shoot. 2. are permanent edge walkers (PEWs). Get in the slough or the corn sometimes instead...

    Hen! Hen! Rooster!

This will be my group of 8 hunters' 26th straight season in South Dakota. We are from Georgia and we have gotten pretty good with our tactics and non-verbal communication. We all know what to do and when to do it to maximize fun and safety. We have a blast every year - birds or no birds.

If you could only pick one week...

We're in the New Holland, Platte, Corsica area and the birds had been tough to come by until 2020. Last two years has been really good. Not 1999-2008 good but much better than 2015-2019.

If you could only pick one week...

2nd week of season. That's usually (emphasize usually), on our 6 farms, time enough to have corn out. Nobody hunts those farms opening week so we have bunched up, un-spooked birds. And normally the weather is still good although 2020 we hunted in snow all week.

Our 20th straight trip to SD for the pheasant opener

Seven of us from Georgia started the tradition 20 years ago this year and man have we made memories. We've seen drought, flood, snow, and 90 degree days but we hunted all four days of all 20 years. We have also accumulated many, many SD friends that now come to Georgia to vacation and visit us...
