    Chick Sightings?

We were hunting the same are at the same time. Shot my first birds out of big stubble fields. The best ones had been left a year and had sunflowers and tumble weeds. Didn’t need CRP with that around

How often do you encounter the law?

In probably 40 trips to SD I have been contacted and checked twice by game wardens. Both were federal and on and around Sand Lake. One was great and one was an asshat. We had stopped on a turn around across from but not on the refuge and were loading up and field cleaning birds as the hotel we...

Will SD GFP get back to basics?

It’s always the ones that scream about the sanctity of marriage…. Or deviants ( while hooking up in the men’s bathroom). Too funny

What are you doing to get ready for the upcoming season?

I started eating a potassium supplement a few days before hunting, that and a bunch of water and I’m good

What are you doing to get ready for the upcoming season?

So the last few years I have allowed my weight and lack of exercise get out of hand. I was miserable in the field last year and really was questioning if I would go on long trips anymore. About 2 months ago I decided I didn’t want to go out that way. I am now at the gym 5 days a week at 5am. Cut...

4, 5, or 6 shot for you early season pheasant hunters? And what choke are you shooting?

So funny how all of this has changed over the years. I started hunting pheasant when I was 12 years old shooting a model 37 featherweight 20 gauge. I shot whatever shells were cheapest and always 6’s. Killed a lot of birds till I was about 20. Switched to an 1100 twelve gauge and still shot 6’s...

I think every truck in KC has rocks in the back of it. I have gotten a couple knocked out myself.

    Birds Around Rugby?

That was interesting but no thanks. Years ago back in the 70’s there were a fair amount of them on a large park not far from us. They would have a rattlesnake roundup every spring. Now they have built houses up there. Most of those were timber rattlers.

At what point do you retire your dog?

He is a machine. We were hunting together 6-7 years ago in December up in SD. I limited fairly early as it was cold and snowing. He was having an off shooting day, but I drove him around and dropped him off for a couple hours. Just when I thought he was done we were off to another one.

    Best Dogs

I have hunted with a lot of different dogs, breeds and people over the years. Titled Labs worth 10’s of thousands and half breeds that were accidents. I have had three really good meat dogs myself. Decent dogs from good lines that I did little training with and got them on birds. A couple years...

    More pheasants than ever before!!

My wife knew she was in to it when we got married. I was really into duck hunting when we met, and many weekends were spent chasing ducks. On our first anniversary I told her I needed to stop by Walmart after we had gone to dinner to pick up some oil or something. She was picking up a couple...

    More pheasants than ever before!!

You guys are lucky living close to decent bird hunting. I used to be a couple hrs away myself. In the 80’s early 90’s I could be in decent numbers in Southern Iowa / northern Missouri. When the numbers dropped severely I started coming to South Dakota. At best it’s 7 -8 hours. Used to make 3-4...
