    28 guage

It's expensive, but if you really like to shoot your 28ga you might consider tungsten shot. Quite a number of folks are using it for turkeys, waterfowl (including geese) and pheasants from .410 and 28ga guns. It allows you to use much smaller shot, thus getting your pellet count up to or above a...

    Traffic collar for training.

And use gloves. A short lead with a loop gives you something to really hold on to. Depending on the dog and the situation, those short leads can burn your hands as the dog takes off. Remember, you are training the dog. Things like that happen fairly often.

    Importance of eCollars?

"Silent hunting" is exactly why I really like to use ecollars on my dogs. I've hunted with folks that jump out of their vehicle and start whistling, tweeting, yelling and whatever trying to get their dogs under control. If you don't think pheasants take notice, you haven't hunted wild pheasants...

Best way to break in new gun

I've had Beretta and Browning O/U's. The Berettas were by far the stiffest out of the box, to the point of having to break them open over your knee. The "removing lubricants" route made it even worse, so I chose to lubricate moderately and shoot the guns. I shoot of lot of skeet and sporting...

    Hunting with two dogs.

Best to hunt young dogs by themselves most of the time. Then the young dog builds confidence and doesn't have his/her birds stolen, either on flush or retrieve. Pheasant hunting gets a bit hectic at times and a young dog can too easily submit to the older dog's drive. Once the young dog is...

    1st Time Heading to grasslands

Be assured there are snakes out there. They are ambush predators so they make their living not being seen. A bird dog makes it's living finding things trying not to be seen.

    1st Time Heading to grasslands

There is a kennel in Rapid City that just held a snake avoidance clinic. He's now advertising individual sessions. No idea what he's charging. Look up Stills Kennel on Facebook.

    Final Rise Vest Sale

That is a good deal if they have one in your size. GoHunt's advertised prices for FinalRise products appears to be straight retail, so the 20% is good, unless they take you to the cleaners on shipping. I've never dealt with GoHunt so I can't say, one way or another. The FinalRise product is well...

    Fall gobblers

In my area they are in town eating crab apples that have started to fall. Two broods totaling somewhere over 20 birds just went through our yard this morning.

    1st Time Heading to grasslands

If you have the opportunity put your dog through a snake avoidance training program. I believe I saw one advertised in the Pierre area, and it included porcupine avoidance as well. The Western South Dakota Bird Dog Club is having a training in September. You can find that info on Facebook. If...

    food

I've been feeding PPP puppy to our lab since she was 8 weeks old. I alternate between the chicken and the lamb formula. No problems. Good, solid stool, growing like a weed. Then, when I opened the last bag of the lamb formula the kibble was half the size of the previous bags. I contacted Purina...

Why did you go with the breed that you did and have you been satisfied?

I'm on my 6th generation of yellow labs. I've had both "American" and "British". As I've gotten older I tend to prefer the true British hunting lab lines as they are a bit easier to train and less of the American field trial mindset. That said, I've enjoyed every one and have what is likely...

    Dog siezures

I believe Colorado State University is doing research on the effectiveness of treating seizures with CBD. You might give the vet school there a call and see if they can give you an update. I know a number of vets that recommend CBD in tincture form to help reduce the number and severity of...

    Giardia in Dogs

I run labs. They live/swim in giardia infest waters. Unless diarrhea is an issue, it makes no sense to treat it. It will just re-establish in the dog. I have no idea why it suddenly becomes an issue, but we are on our 6th generation and have only treated a handful of times. The worst was an 8...

    Feeding Time

I run labs which seem prone to twisted gut, but thankfully we are now on our 6th generation and have never had a problem, not that it can't happen. I do only feed a small amount the morning I hunt and then add to the evening feeding "just in case". I don't try to overload my dogs with water just...

    protection while hunting

I tried these, twice. Adhered to their fitting instructions to a "T". I was shooting skeet. After a round my ears were ringing so badly I might as well have worn nothing. There is no magic in life (the percussive filter) in my opinion. I returned the product.

    Why I love labs

True. We skijored with ours in Alaska, but be careful. It is hard on their knees! Labs are stout, tough dogs, but many lab lines have notoriously weak knees. Both labs we had in Alaska required TPLO surgery. One had both back knees repaired. TPLO surgery is expensive and requires extensive rehab...

    Why I love labs

Remembered these photos my wife took a couple of years ago. This is the 4th and 5th generation. Hunting in boots in a sand burr, goat head infested field in Kansas and relaxing in the travel trailer later. I have no idea how the younger one doesn't hang that tongue up, but she's nine now and has...

    Why I love labs

All bird dogs are great! That said, we started with labs in Alaska in 1989. We used to fly two down to South Dakota every fall and hunt for a month. After moving back to the lower 48 we have a smorgasbord of hunting opportunities, everything from dusky (blue) grouse to desert quail. We even had...

    Turn out the lights

We're done in New Mexico. Not a bad year. Seemed like fewer birds, but that may be because dog and I are getting older. I just enjoy getting out. Next year old dog and I will have a new recruit to keep us honest. It will be interesting, for sure. Everybody have a good off season.
