28ga

Just turned 20 this year and decided I was going to put the 28 gauge to the test this year as I get out more than the typical guy( in college, living at home), shooting Fiocchi golden pheasant 2 3/4 #5 out of the Stevens 555 E. I have shot 50+ roosters with this gun out to 35 yards and have had zero issues. Do not think I will ever touch another gauge after this season.
I used to shoot a Stevens 555 28 ga. it had a lot of recoil compared to my Weatherby Orion SxS 28ga and Benelli Ultralight 28ga. I do shoot a .410 Stevens 555 Sporting and I love it!

My intern at work shoots a 28 gauge SxS. (I taught him well.). He buys Golden Pheasants by the case, and I’ve seen him kill a pile of roosters stone dead with it. My brother in law was commenting last week about some of the shots he watched him successfully make with the pea shooter.

Yesterday at work intern was lamenting about our last hunt- we were walking a mile long waterway, he switched to his old 391 12 guage. He said he should have had his limit multiple times over but just couldn’t hit with it after shooting his 28 the previous few days.

I purchased my first 28 gauge 3 years ago, a FAIR Iside Basic. I like to pattern test shotguns before they see field use. The stock chokes were crap with target and field loads, poor distribution and blown patterns. I had some buyers remorse. I decided to try some TruLock chokes. What a difference a good choke makes. What i discovered with the Iside 28 gauge was the center pattern density can be really tight. Last spring I traded in my Ultralite 12 , (got tired of the recoil) for an SBE 28 gauge. The pattern testing verified the same tendency of tight center pattern density.

Great stuff!!! I bought some of the chokes Trulock makes for the Franchi Instinct 16 ga for my Iside. Did you buy those or did you get something else from Trulock?

Here’s where I am right now. I have 2 Franchi 48 AL 28 gauges. I am considering a SBE 3 and selling one of the 48 ALs. I have read that the SBE 3 patterns at 90%-100% high. Not sure I want that. Any opinions?

I did not find that pattern issue with the 28. However the SBE3 in 12 gauge does have an issue, from verified experience.

The late great gene hill was a huge fan of the 28. Yes he was mostly a grouse and woodcock guy but he hunted pheasant too. As has been said before an oz of lead at 1200 fps well placed is deadly for pheasant. I have a berets 686 silver pigeon 28. I use trulock extended chokes. I hunt with arock solid llewellin pointing dog. I mainly use the 28 walking ditches in SD. Get a slight breeze and ruby will point them from the edge of the road. One or two steps and they go. The little 28 does the job. It’s also the go to for grouse and woodcock in the Michigan north woods.
