Harvest already starting

I saw my first corn field being harvested yesterday. The corn is turning yellow/brown all over my south central area of the state.
At this rate the fields will be empty for a month before the season.
 
I thought the same thing, but they had a semi with a grain trailer in the field and no chopper boxes. I didn't see a chopper or combine.
 
We chopped silage this past week but a neighbor is combining corn. He plants short date corn early so he can say he was first to harvest every year. The rest of the are is 7-10 days from beans being ready and 3 weeks or so from corn. This is in Ohio.
 
My corn is ahead of beans this year. Should make it to Michigan for grouse opener though. Reckon I’m 2 weeks from rolling
 
I can't imagine there's going to be a mad rush to harvest this season, looking at the price. Corn has gone from about $5/bushel close to $4 since May. Soybeans aren't any better.

I'm not economist so I can't comment on specific reasons, but record yields and harvest are predicted, creating a surplus of supply. Usually when supply goes up, demand drops, lowering the price.
 
Just watched us farm report this am…mainly to see Tyne Morgan ❤️. China’s not buying our soybeans like they used to, which hurts for sure. With cattle herds decreasing, I suppose the demand for corn is down from that source. Most of my farmer friends sell their corn to an ethanol plant, and there are times they quit buying. They showed stats that in many states, there’s not enough storage capability vs expected yields…lotsa corn may be dumped outside. Good time to be a grain bin builder…especially with crops at these prices.

Knowing weather is always a risk—wind, hail, snow, etc—there’s always an urgency to harvest amongst my farmer friends…at least get it in bins or store it at the elevator for a modest fee per bushel per month…my guys aren’t getting much more than $3.30-3.40 for corn, at least the last time I asked.
 
In the past few years there have been terrible winds in September/October (derecho levels) that knocked huge amounts of corn to the ground…75 mph, +/-…really does some damage, and it’s very difficult harvesting it when it’s knocked down, and I think that’s tough on equipment, too…always something! I’d be a nervous wreck if I were a farmer…😩
 
Price has no effect on harvest timing. Crop condition is everything. When she’s ready you better go get her. The window for optimal harvest is small and goes the other way quick. That hurricane that came up last year is a great example. Beans molding in the pods and corn on the ground. It hurt me that’s for sure. The buzz word this year is disease. Time will tell but usda is almost invariably high on expected yield.
