Semi auto or break action shotgun?

To paraphrase a friend; "When you pass the Colonel Sanders on the way out of town, you've left all logic behind." If I needed to kill something to be able to eat or to save money, my math tells me the $50k pickup, many tens of thousands in guns, gear, and licenses, not to mention the cost of...

Is it worth going this year, and why I like pheasant hunting

I retired a couple years ago. Everyday beats working now. ;)

    Chokes

    (y) Everyone should check their gun for point of impact vs point of aim. If you don't get that right, it makes for an "unlucky" gun. You'd be surprised how many guns have a point of impact that is off half a pattern, left, right, up, down. You can change it with gun fit, in most cases, simply by...

    Chokes

Chokes, the most over thought piece of equipment. Run what ya brung, if you forgot what's screwed in there. Cylinder works for me over my pointer, or any open choke. If I was in SD and assigned a blocking position, something tight with a load that has a lot of #5 shot prevents too much...

    Planning a trip this year

There's public land on the east bank of the Mo. It may be crowded for a few days after the opener, but it's good hunting.

    Is South Dakota just hype?

Don''t know how true it is, but a farm owner friend outside Huron said the state has been releasing birds for years. Anyone know?

    Is South Dakota just hype?

Not long ago, Winner was the center of the rooster universe. But around the Missouri river was great too.

    Where to go...MT ID SD?

I reviewed 3 years of rainfall in north central MT, specifically Shelby, Havre, and Tiber Dam/Lake Elwell. Looks grim. Hardly a drop of precipitation for 2 years. I'm thinking the grasses are dead and gone like we had down in CA a half dozen years ago.

    Is South Dakota just hype?

The last time I hunted SD was probably 10 years ago, But I hunted it over a span of about 30 years with a 10 year gap in there somewhere. I first hunted there in the early 80s. To say it was incredible would be an understatement. I hunted only private land around Huron on a friend's property...

    Planning a trip this year

Someone mentioned ditches. It's legal to shoot on roads in SD except interstate highways. Here's the information you need to know. https://www.sdnewswatch.org/stories/south-dakota-road-hunting-laws-most-permissive-in-the-great-plains/ A couple guys can do pretty well driving down roads...

Yeah, my wife says I'm not going on either of those hunts. She says "the dog is hers".

    Managing for Huns?

I've only hunted them a couple seasons. We were finding them in chukar country of ID, OR, and WA. I was surprised. We were in rocky, arid areas and it was 50-50 huns vs chukar. They seemed to be as adept at the rocky, steep terrain as the chukar. All that I had seen on tv and read about...

    Suggestions on a lighter gun

While we're talking weight, figure out how many shells you normally tote around, weigh them. Then ask yourself if you're hauling around too many. Try weighing the same number of shells in a smaller gauge you'd be willing to use. You might be able to save quite a bit of weight there, in...

    Suggestions on a lighter gun

I'm not much of an autoloader shooter anymore. But, I've had a few over the years, 1100, S&W, and a couple Berettas. When I did some smithing for a few years, I worked on a bunch of them. My choice, if I had to have a autoloader, would be a Beretta gas gun. Takes a little more maintenance...
