    Grouse report

I'm headed for deer camp this afternoon. One of my brothers finished a big job and headed up yesterday. He sent picture of a new clearcut they're still logging on. It will be a good woodcock spot @ the year 2030. In the County land where our family has hunted since the mid-50's, they've...

    Grouse report

I shot more grouse this year than the last couple seasons. If I was in good cover, I found grouse. Woodcock were off for me. Some of that has to do with my favorite coverts of young aspen now getting too old to provide habitat for them. Still, I'm always scouting and I hunted new areas that...

    gps tracking devices?

Thank you. Great advice. I'll be looking into this.

    gps tracking devices?

Greetings: I do a fair amount of hunting alone. Now in my 60's and with a few health issues over the past 10 years, I worry about something happening to me while I'm out of cell phone coverage. My wife and I have "find my phone" on our Iphones. She can see where I'm at as long as I've got...

    2021 Bird Hunting Pics/Reports

Hit the woodcock pretty good two weekends ago. Grouse numbers decent, too. This past weekend in Vilas Co, the woodcock had mostly moved on. Lots of chalk on the ground and only a few birds.

    2020 WI Pheasant Reports/Pics

Grouse numbers are pretty good in the north this year. And the woodcock are starting to move. We shot some limits of woodcock and a decent take on grouse this past weekend.

    Porkys

Call me lucky, or whatever, but my Setters point porkies. Have encountered at least 1 with my last 3 dogs. Same for skunks.

    Safety etiquette question

I don't like hunting with people I don't know well and this question is one of the reasons why. There is absolutely NO reason to have the safety off unless in the motion of shooting at game, target. Years ago I made plans to grouse hunt with a buddy. We meet at the appointed place and time...

    Pheasants of the Mind

Actually, hanging a dressed bird in the right conditions makes perfect sense. Here at home I often leave the birds out at least overnight before cleaning them. You pay good money for aged steak. Why not a bird? The poultry you buy in store has hanged in a meat locker for some period, too. To be...

    Checking In

Sorry to hear about the old partner passing away. It's a very hard experience to get over. Yes, the site has been pretty quiet. My usual group for the opener isn't going and I'm looking at a later hunt this year. I think it will be tough the first couple weeks with so much corn still standing.

    boot dryer

I have one from Cabelas and love it. Wish it had arms for gloves/mittens. I use mine for my Danner and Rocky boots. Nothing like getting up to hunt on a cold morning and your boots are warm and dry. I was told by a boot dealer that it will ruin the slipon Muck style boots, though.

    Rain

I've hunted around Webster. There is good cover, birds and plenty of public access hunting. A lot of ponds surrounded by cattails. I scouted in the morning with a hunting atlas. ID'd smaller areas and found a couple where they were picking corn next to, or close to a public access area. Those...

    Iowa Huns

I've run into a covey in Iowa and one in South Dakota in over 15 years of hunting pheasants in both states. In Iowa a couple years ago, a covey flushed on the other side of our line of 4 guys. I was yelling "Huns shoot". The guys within shooting distance didn't know what they were and thought I...

    Any birds left

I have a friend in Iowa who travels a lot for work. He enjoys pulling over to send me pictures/videos of pheasants he's seeing because he thinks it gets me worked up. It doesn't get me worked up too much, but it is good seeing that birds made it through the winter and I appreciate the pictures...

    Late season hunt

I know how you feel. My grandfather grew up on a farm east of Eagle Grove. The farm no longer exists, but my daughter found an old plat map from years ago and we located it. I had been driving back and forth by it all the times I have been out there hunting and always wondered where it was. It's...
