    HB 1236 Safety Zone Increase

It passed through the committee and will now have a floor vote from the whole senate, likely this morning. One more chance to them to vote this down. I highly doubt the governor vetos it, so this is it.

    HB 1236 Safety Zone Increase

All, Not sure what the rules are on politics on the board, but the SD State house has passed HB 1236, which would increase the safety buffer around dwellings and livestock from the 660 feet it has been for many years to 1320 feet, effectively eliminating a fair swath of public road hunting...

    Passing through SD…Pheasants Galore

According to Keloland, Worthing and the southern metro area of Sioux Falls received over 18 inches from this storm. Close to the year’s total in about two days, and it had already been a pretty wet spring…

    Grouse Hunting and Snakes

Will do on all of those fronts. He already gets the vaccine and booster, in addition to the snake breaking. I searched through old threads and didn’t find much information, especially regarding the eastern Sandhills area I’m talking about.

    Grouse Hunting and Snakes

Looking for some info on what people have experienced in early season grouse hunting near Thedford/Dunning/Broken Bow with regards to snakes? I’m up in South Dakota and may want to pop down for a September hunt. I’m not looking at going too far north or west from the area mentioned but I’m...

    Hunting Unharvested Corn or Soybeans

If you use the state’s walk in atlas GIS online or get the hard paper version, there are some WIA areas that have a red outline or blue hashing through them. Those have special regulations, and one of them is related to no hunting in I harvested crops. It’s not every property, but some will...

    More pheasants than ever before!!

Not sure that this is indicative of anything one way or the other for the pheasant hatch, but I did see a large covey of Huns yesterday in the far east central part of the state. I’ve only ever seen one or two other coveys in the state, so that was cool. Then, a quarter mile down the road, a...

    More rain! Widespread!

Pretty big cell hit the Wessington Springs to Parker track last night. Supposedly had some hail in it, but I’m not sure how much and how large. Cooler temps ahead.

    More rain! Widespread!

It’s still early July though, and there are a few birds still hatching or that just hatched within the last couple weeks. They say the first 10-14 days after hatch is critical with thermal regulation, so rain today was still beneficial for birds that hit the ground at the end of June. Peak...

    Update….

Driving in east central part of the state today and saw a hen with a brood of at least 8 chicks. Might have been 10+. That’s just one observation, but if that’s representative of how the birds did nesting, things will be looking good.

Hunter Pressure and Harvest by County

I fully agree that the best thing to do is to start looking at lower harvest areas with a lot lower hunters. There are some gems out there that don’t get near the amount of pressure or press that certain areas do. All things being equal, like weather and hunting pressure, I’m sure Mitchell or...

Hunter Pressure and Harvest by County

Does North Dakota publish any sort of data showing estimated hunters and harvest by County like South Dakota does? South Dakota’s is just a survey, so accuracy is only somewhat reliable, but it’s really interesting and helpful to see the breakdown of pressure and harvest by county. I know each...

Rain in some of pheasant country…🙏🏻🤞

It may not fully reduce the drought areas, but it definitely helps and it for sure makes a big impact with more bugs on the landscape and less oppressively hot days for the chicks in their first few weeks. It was a very timely rain.

Rain in some of pheasant country…🙏🏻🤞

Widespread showers tonight over most of the pheasant country. Hopefully no major hail, but man what a relief. We needed this.
