    January hunt

Dec. and January are my favorite months. Deer hunting has calmed down and you rarely see anybody in the field. I’m retired so I look for weather windows and leave accordingly. 30ft tow strap, clevis, corn scoop, food, water, downy sleeping bag, ice shack heater, all should be on the list. If...

Looking for a single dog training collar...like the Tritronics G3

I used Sportdog for years but it finally crapped out. I have two dogs now, so I went with a Dogtra 282c because Zeb told me to, and I always do what he says. They are really good collars and we run the dogs daily with them, so we use the crap out of them. It was a good switch.

    Kent ultimate ammo

I’ve been shooting them for about three seasons. I started with them because they were so cheap, but now nothing is cheap. Shoot mostly 4s. They have a little snort to them, but seem to work well out of my BUL. I found some 5s that I’m gonna pattern now. Found them at fleet farm. Using mostly IC...

Anyone adding a dog this year?

I added another French spaniel last year. I have a 10 year old so I wanted to hunt them together as long as she’s able. My son lives next door and we bought a sister/brother combo. All of them came from Minnesota French spaniels. They are hairy critters, but are a lot of fun to hunt behind. Had...

    Relocation to south dakota

You are half way there. Much closer than most of us will ever get. I haven’t run into many women in SD who are thinking about their nails, but I’m up hunting north of Gettysburg, a little off the grid. My wife couldn’t find SD on the map. Consider yourself in an elite group. It’s gonna work out.

    Relocation to south dakota

We are all pretty full when we discuss where to live in SD, but they all say live in the hills if you can. I like the canyon in Spearfish, but my budget is Miller.

I wish I could do the same. I would end up in Miller, I think. I’ve never been to Pierre. I gotta run through there on my way home next fall.

Lots of hens - no roosters

I just have terrible hunting in in warm, calm weather. I don’t know where they go. The colder the better, along with some wind seems to be best. It’s almost like if I don’t suffer, the birds don’t suffer.

    Extended season

Hard to understand the logic because the pellet count is 202 with 4s and 212 with 1 1/4oz of 5s. The controllable variable has to be the choke. You can blow birds up with just about any load if you choke it improperly. I have never had that issue with the load that I shoot. In fact, most birds...

    Full gun cleaning

I just do it to give me an excuse to go down to the basement with the dogs and get away from the distractions upstairs. I could probably pitch my Benelli in a creek and pick it up and use it next fall. It is interesting to see how the actions work, tho. Some smart guys out there designing stuff.

    Extended season

I’ve experimented with many different shot sizes and loads over the last decade and for some reason, settled into this combination. I like 4s, but wanted 200 in the pattern, so it took 1.5oz to get me there. 1.25 oz of 5s gave me 10 more shot, but my gun, the pattern board, and the wind, sold me...

    Extended season

Yup, and Kent Bismuth on the WPAs. Both good late season loads for me.

    Extended season

Geez those late season roosters are tough, tho. Kent Fastlead 11/2 oz of 4s at 35-45 yards. Pretty peppy load and skeet 2. Seems like over-kill but only lost one runner. Older dog mighta got him.
