    2025 WI Pheasant Thread

Well, I can say that a few pheasants made it through this mild winter! I saw a couple roosters sparring the other day, ran a couple dogs in the fog the other day and did get some pointed. Today I ran a different pair and got one rooster pointed. There’s a big influx of robins out today, spring...

That’s a pretty fair description, St Paul East! Good fishing rivers in the area.

I don’t have one, but a lot of people rave about the FAIR Isides, I believe they come with choke tubes.

Late season public lands, N. Kansas

If I wasn’t doing this I’d be working, so yes it was a great day! I usually only run one dog at a time, but with that wind I just wanted to get everyone out before I quit so I ran pairs. Early in the week there were some unpassable roads, today I came across one - you can tell right away and get...

Late season public lands, N. Kansas

I went out for two swings today, the wind is brutal! Ran two older dogs first, found one covey out feeding in the wheat. The poked eye dog pointed, the other backed nicely. Moved an hour further east and ran the next pair. The youngest found a few singles buried in the grass, the other dog was...

Late season public lands, N. Kansas

Not sure, I’m assuming either a yucca or a locust thorn. Happened yesterday late afternoon, the dog was on fire! She had four covey finds, then followed up with a bunch of singles. The singles were sitting tight in some pretty thick and gnarly stuff, see photo. Last night I flushed her eyes...

Late season public lands, N. Kansas

I’m out here in Kansas for the past week. I will say that these WIHA’s make it challenging. Most of them are not very good cover, or any cover at all. I’ve been finding enough spots to get all the dogs (English Setters) ran each day, if there’s cover you’ll find some birds. I’ve been targeting...

    2025 WI Pheasant Thread

Man it’s been tough this past week or so. Lots of people, not a lot of birds. Ran 2 dogs yesterday for an hour apiece, each had a couple finds but birds are spooky! Today I ran 3 dogs for a bit over an hour apiece, first dog had a rooster and then a hen. Next dog had a bang up find on a rooster...

    2025 WI Pheasant Thread

Got out this morning, very windy. Dog did a nice job, pointed 2 hens right out of the gate. After that we had 3 find on roosters, 1st one flushed towards the road so no shooting. Second one flushed and went out low, no shot there either. The last one flushed into the wind, then turned and wet...

    Pheasant hunting north west Wisconsin

Went out for the opener this morning, lots of people out. Got on one small spot, maybe 40 acres or so. Had a couple wild flushes from the edge of the corn, then had a nice find out in the grass. Flushed a brood, 3 squawking roosters and 5 or 6 hens. They were small and I had just been out 10...

    Grouse, season start, and snares

I’ve never had to go to a vet for a trapped dog, no injury happened. I did have two dogs go in this fall for barbed wire tears, one was $280.00, the other $200.00. I suppose if you had a dog in a foothold trap that was jumping around and carrying on it could hurt itself, not sure about that though.

    Grouse, season start, and snares

I’ve had a few dogs get caught in a foothold trap, not a big deal. One dog caught in a snare, she just sat down and waited for me to turn her loose. All sportsmen need to stick together, legal trapping is just as valid as legal hunting.

    2024 Pheasant Pics/Reports

Been out a bit myself, had 2 roosters pointed on Friday that flushed before I could get there. Saturday had 4 finds, all hens with one point 4 birds. Sunday was tough, got soaked, only ran 2 dogs in the morning with no points and 3 wild flushes. Yesterday ran the old girl, lost her in the wind...

    2024 Pheasant Pics/Reports

Walked a bunch today, saw just a few birds. Ran the pup first, had a nice find on a pair of hens. Later, she pointed in the farmyard that adjoins the public, a couple of squawking roosters flushed as I quietly snuck in and grabbed the pup. That was it for that spot, there were some guys out...

In your opinion, how many public land pheasants in the bag would make for a successful season?

It’s been chilly out there! Friday had 2 birds pointed, first one a hen after about an hour. Changed dogs, new spot, one rooster pointed and shot. Saturday morning was out for two hours, no birds pointed, 2 wild flushes on hens. Evening had the pup down, got three pointed, all hens. Pup did a...
