How far do you let your dogs go?

Since my Sportdog vs Garmin thread almost got hijacked...I figured let's have the debate. What breed of dogs are you hunting over? How far out do you let them range? Plus, let's see the boys and girls for a dog tax! Socks is a GSP and he's a big runner. I have no problems letting him range out...

    Sportdog vs garmin

To be honest, I'm perfectly fine with Socks getting out to 150ish provided he comes back to check-in. Long casts are great when it's just the two of us in a quarter section so we can cover a lot of real estate. The original aspect of this topic was to compare the Sportdog to Garmin, as I (and...

    Sportdog vs garmin

Hey gang, I would love your opinion on collars. I currently run the Sportdog TEK series but I'm just not convinced it is holding up after two seasons of hard hunting. I've been looking into the Garmin series of e-collars with gps and training ability so I'm wondering if anyone out there has...

    Missing GSH's near Ulysses

Last year in Socks's first year, we were hunting down by Arlington. It was taller CRP and the wind came up enough Socks couldn't hear me very well. GPS collar had him at 100, then 200, then 300 yards and moving. Soon it was 500, then 700, then my collar went from yards to miles. We don't know...

    Ringing in 2025 correctly!

We took to the field this morning working public ground. Socks did pretty well in the milo field by pointing a hen, working one skittish hen to a buffer strip before she hit her afterburners as he couldn't pin her, and pointing one other rooster (I think) breaking before I could get to it. Dang...

    Does it get any better?

This morning, despite a worthless ankle, Socks and I took a buddy out for his first-ever pheasant hunt. My buddy grew up in Missouri and likes to take to the woods for deer now and then, but was intrigued by the prospect of chasing some of those pimp suit-wearing ditch chickens. I had been...

    Yips

Well this was not the thread I needed to read. Because the ups came up HUGE today as I whiffed on four roosters. Should have limited out and walked back to the truck, but nope I'm not sure there were even pellets in my shells. Socks gave me a side eye.

    And thus it begins

I think I'll keep feeding him. He hunted with his dad today and it was incredible to see them running together at times, and then hunting for the gun. They covered a ton of real estate and both had several solid points with Socks getting to have some rock hard honors on his dad's points. It was...

    What would your reaction be?

On Opening Day, I had a friend hunting an area of public hunting which required a check-in and non toxic shot. While they are in the field or just beginning, SEVENTEEN pickups all from Texas rolled up on them (in a quarter section) and hunters poured out of the trucks. My friend kind of asked...

Good luck to y'all going out tomorrow!

Stay safe! Good luck!! Watch out because a lot of the roads are going to turn to slime pits. Socks and I will probably wait until Sunday evening to go out, so we wish y'all the best out there. Enjoy your time in the field this weekend boys and girls!

    And thus it begins

Orignally, I was taken with Socks. But his brother was growing on me as I was walking all of them at times, working on some "whoa" and "easy" commands. Socks was very independent, and he loved to watch the world from a corner of the kennel. The whole family was out there one October day last...

    And thus it begins

OMG! So many people think Socks is a lab. I had a prof from the local college ask me "So is that a lab?" I said "No, he's a GSP." "Are you sure?" "Uh, relatively? It says so on his papers." Almost as if I didn't know my own dog's breed.

    And thus it begins

I got him from a friend who has had litters of GSPs off and on. Socks is 18 months old with two black and white feet and a black and white chest plate.
