    Despite it all

The boy is picking things up. Eight months old and his honor is solid, he loves to retrieve and he's got a pretty decent nose. Of course, he's got some MPE (Mad Puppy Energy) so once in a while, recall is a battle, but the dog is pretty smart.

    Despite it all

We had a great week. Socks had his first retrieve along with a lot of work on some pen-raised and wild birds. I'd like to think we're doing things right.

    Despite it all

First gun dog for me. I've hunted over many GSPs including my pup's dad and grandad.

    Despite it all

I think I'm ready For the last 4 years, my hunting has unfortunately been limited as I've been my Mom's caretaker. Dad passed away five years ago in July of '18 and mom suddenly had a myriad of health issued come boiling up. She only had one functioning kidney and was in stage 4 of renal...

    Reports

Two of us on one private field with one dog. Each bird was pointed. Shot a 7th, but couldn't find it even after two wild scrambles for it. Saw one hen and two other roosters. Central KS. It is absolutely the definition of pockets of birds. Might make the list of a top 5 all time hunt.

Lock and Load for the Opener

I've been in the same spot only maybe a bit worse. We were walking a 1/4 of WIHA down in Edwards county. It had a great tree row on the west edge and another tree row which kind of bisected the middle, jutting out from the one bordering the road. Four of us had decided to walk it, and had just...

    Reports

South Central. Saw decent numbers in two patches, couldn't shoot worth a darn. 6 walkers and no dog. One of the guys who was bringing dogs had to bail.

Lock and Load for the Opener

Gun is clean, boots are ready, vest is loaded. Sign is up. Yeah, there's a little story here.

Lock and Load for the Opener

Good Luck my man. Wasn't planning on hunting, but got a phone call from a landowner asking if I could round up some guys for a walk. Looks like we'll be out as well!!

    2022 Forecast Is Out

They could have saved paper and just sent three words. Dry and Bleak.

    It still runs deep.

For me, the memory is still as fresh as it was some 33 years ago. It was a cheerful Friday afternoon as the third weekend in November kicked off in 1988. I don’t remember the day, I don’t remember school, I just remember being home at 3:30 when I heard the phone ring. Mom called to me and told...

    Opening Weekend

Sunday was much better. The temps were cooler and the birds seemed to hold. We managed three roosters and three quail. However we had a lot of fun and lots of laughs.

    Opening Weekend

Warm. Windy. Pretty sure all the birds we saw were wearing Nikes. Makes me wonder how many we walked over, but it still felt great to be out.

    Public land etiquette?

I've hunted a lot of WIHA in Kansas. The worst experience we ever had was in Edwards or Stafford County. It was a quarter section of CRP with a tree row (not hedge or cedar) running along the western road. The tree row had a T about halfway too. We had just started, six of us, shot a rooster and...

    Youth Season

There needs to be more than a "like" available for this. I hope your son is hooked!

One week until the best time of year

For me, it all started when I was 11 years old in the fall of 1988. My parents wouldn't allow me to take my Hunter's Safety course as a fifth grader, when you could take it without having a parent present. Not a big deal to me, I enrolled in the class during the fall in sixth grade and complete...

What are your plans this year?

This year? Get out. Be with friends. Laugh. Watch the dogs. Enjoy the time outdoors. Share stories. Make new memories while rehashing the old ones. And if we shoot a few birds, even better.

Best of luck to you guys heading out tomorrow

Let's face it, adulting is hard. I'm stuck behind the microphone for a college basketball classic because our coach can't read a clock and thought a 1 p.m. tip was a great idea. It'll be only the second Opening Day I've missed in 31 years of hunting. Despite it, I'm still frothing at the...

    When the passion strikes again

When it hit, it was like a ton of bricks had been dropped upon me. It was a sensation which pounded into me with an incredible swiftness, a proverbial punch to the gut which left me gasping, not for air but rather at the intensity of the feeling of wanting more. It was the feeling of the...

The first hunt after losing your dad

It's been six weeks to the day my dad passed away with a massive heart attack. He was a key member in my little hunting group, once a walker, having been more relegated to being a blocker/truck mover. I know Opening Day will be a bit rough, but I'm just looking for any tips or how you guys...
