Be patient. I don't expect my dogs to get it until 50 plus bird encounters. Like others are saying bring the dog to game farm along with a check cord and work the wind. Some breeds come along faster than others. Birds make bird dogs NOT time.
Interestingly enough I'm in the same boat. I spoke with some at SD licensing and they said that the 2024 Pheasant Dates haven't been finalized and publicly broadcasted. I'm starting to doubt that one could buy a license on 12/15 that would allow them to hunt 5 days in 23 and the remaining 5 days...
I just returned from a quick trip to Sodak. IMO Bird # were good. Hunted on Sunday and the overcast weather and heavy frost and fog seemed to keep the birds from moving. Once things warmed up the birds were moving from bed to feeding cover. I tended to find the birds in public that had...
Did anyone track this down? Looking to burn up my 2nd date of my first license next week. Buy a new one for mid-Dec hunt and have the remaining 5 days for the 2024 Opener... If not will do some homework.
I stayed local in Minnesota. Had a great day. Five month French Brit had a nice 20 yard point in 15 mph winds. Got into some birds and found some great spots for later season. Will be back in SoDak first week of Dec.
I just pulled the plug on going. I spoke with warden for county I was planning on hunting in. He Suggested I wait until Monday or until after Dec3. Most of the public I hunt have groves in them and I see plenty of deer stands out.
Planning on heading out East River this weekend which conincides with east river deer. Planning on hunting small public’s. Will wear plenty of blaze on myself and dogs. Should I cancel ? Using Mitchell as home base.
Anyone have any training ideas on dealing with barbed wire? Two dogs got nicked pretty good on the Sd opener. I typical run my dog with Mendota skid plate which has helped. Birds have a habit of going up by fence lines.
Check out Rex specs has ear coverings. I’m about to invest in some rex specs googles. Too much crap in dogs eyes after hunting cat tails. Cheaper in the long run.
