Late Dec. Hunting

I am trying to plan a hunt in Kansas for pheasant and quail. I was looking into the Hanston area to hunt on public land. I was wondering how the hunting is just after Christmas. I think that is about the only time I can get out because of work. Is there a lot of preasure that time of year on public ground? How would the bird numbers be at that time of year on public ground? It would be a group of 2 hunters and I would bring my two vizslas. Thanks for any info.

it can get pretty busy between Christmas and New Years...if you are coming then plan on knocking on a few doors, private ground is the only way to go.

What is the best way to get into some private land? Our hunting party would be 2-3 guys and two dogs. Would just knocking on some doors be the best way to go?

yep, be respectful, tell 'em who you are and how far you have come to chase roosters, you will get on enough places to shoot some birds...ask around at restaurants or filling station, etc....might even find a place while having a beer downtown too. mark your spots for the future and offer a ham or some beer...people are nice.

Thanks for the advice. I thought of bringing some local treats to give as gifts/thanks for access to land. My area of Pa is known as the snack food capital of the world and I thought some of different kinds of chips and snacks put together with a case of Yingling Lager may help us gain access.

While I agree that getting on private ground would be best, I disagree that it is the "only way to go". I hunt quite a bit of public ground in Kansas and I rarely get skunked and tend to find my fair share of birds. Quite a few times the public land is just as good, if not better, than private land late in the year. In fact, a buddy and I shot 5 roosters of public ground in 4 hours of hunting this past Saturday and did not see another bird hunter around. The birds are there, you just half to know what to look for and work for them this time of year. Just my two cents.

true, the wiha's can give up birds, you need to know which ones and how to hunt them, as those birds have been pressured a lot.....the correct approach can be everything.
