Colorado Sage Grouse

Heading out tomorrow for some Sage Grouse hunting on the western slope. Will be the first wild bird hunt for the new Golden. I plan on hunting unit 3 - if we get into them Saturday figure we will head into Routt to chase some blues. Hopefully my scouting paid off last week - if your headed that way PM me.

Dog has surgery tomorrow for an abscessed tooth. Might try last day of season if the vet clears him. Otherwise I'm going to hold at home until prairie chicken season starts in Kansas.
 
Well it wasn’t an abscessed tooth so my Springer was raring to go. Headed up Saturday morning. Ran into 3 birds. Brought two to hand.
I was surprised a the little bit of sign I saw. Usually in this area I bump at least two coveys. There was a lot of water and feed but the birds seemed to be absent. I know it’s not my Springer in the picture. It’s my fox red lab. She’s the ham and likes being in photos.IMG_1639.jpeg

I witnessed the same, lots of good water and vegetation but no sign and I didn’t flush anything. Several years of drought and a tough winter?
 
Went up for the Saturday opener. I had two flush wild off of a hillside. Tried to pick them up but couldn’t find them. Walked a few more miles and flushed two off of a hillside. Flubbed the first shot then rolled one on second shot. I saw where the other one sailed and went over and picked him up. Both birds were big mature males. Temps rose quick so we finished up and headed home. IMG_4614.jpeg
 
That's a successful hunt. Congrats.

We wild flushed 1 big male in the first 20 minutes of opener, but then haven't seem a bird since. It definitely got too hot yesterday so we didn't hunt between 10am and 4pm. We'll keep moving around to new spots. We noticed a lack of grasshoppers this year, not sure if that's just our spot or everywhere.
 
We didn’t see any hoppers on our trip, every bird we shot was eating lettuce, a few juniper berries.
 
Who else is gonna be out tomorrow for the Sage grouse opener? I should have killed a limit opening day last year but poor shooting did me in. Hopefully I find a lot of birds again tomorrow and shoot better too!

It’s a short season, only 7 days but all you need is a small game license and new this year, a $5 Sage grouse/sharptail grouse/ptarmigan permit.
 
Jealous Arkansan here. We just don’t have birds other than ducks and doves anymore. I miss it. I would love to experience that hunt in the future.
 
Scratched out one - found a sharptail as well. Heard from friends North Park had quite a bit of shooting at first light Saturday, then went quiet the rest of the weekend. Anyone hear from Matt (uplandhunter67) recently? Shot him a text and looks like his number was disconnected/changed.

Must have been on the refuge or by Delaney Buttes not a shot fired all day by Lake John. Worst I have seen there ever.
