RE: Do you use eyeshileds on Dogs for upland hunting out west

hey guys,

Again, thank you all for anwsering/replying to my noob questions. I was at a hunting expo this weekend, and there was a guy selling eyeshields for dogs. Of course he was selling them, but it seemed a little extream to me for upland bird dogs. I would feel that is may be a good idea for a guard dog or police dog (they may be sprayed with something bad) but not too sure I need a set of goggles to keep dust out of a hunting dogs eyes.

I did a search, so it does not appear to be discussed here. So I just wanted to see what the experienced people here thought about them. I know we all have a heart felt desire to protect our dogs, but it feels extreme to dress them up like buzz lightyear and send them out. Evey thing we add to the dog adds weight and risk of getting snagged or caught on something. To me it seems like less it better.

Anyway, any thoughts you all would like to share would be kindly appreciated.

My boy doesn't hit the field without his RexSpecs! I got them for him after playing "find the seed under the eyelid" in one eye and then a scratched cornea in the other.

thank you for taking the time. For the pictures, it looks like it does not hamper his ability at all. Did it take a lot to get him used to them?

He loves wearing them. I just followed the guidance in the packaging and he took to them in a couple of days. I also have mirrored and smoked lenses for summer on the boat! He has made water retrieves with them and no impact at all on his performance. They are running a 20% sitewide sale right now.

I knew that at least one person on here used something like that. I don't. However, the dogs get a thorough eye inspection after every day afield. It seems like there is always something to remove--a small seed, a piece of grass, etc. They probably could have gotten the stuff out by themselves most of the time, but I feel better checking and my wife insists on it. It definitely cuts down on the goopy "eye boogers" they seem to develop overnight if I forget to check. Once I needed to take one of them to a vet. The vet removed a pretty decent sized seed and all was good.

My dog bag also has a bottle of contact lens solution for rinsing eyes and minor barbed wire cuts.

I was ok with removing the seed from under the third eyelid, but the scratch was what I couldn't deal with. I too keep a bottle of saline rinse. I also now have a couple of different eye specific antibiotic drops from the vet. I have a lot higher level of comfort knowing he is protected from all the possible things that could negatively impact his eyes. I know birds dogs have been doing this for a lot of years, but he deserves to be safe and comfortable doing what he loves.

I have seen YouTube videos of guys using those on their dogs on sandhill crane hunts. Those birds will play dead and then spear your dog when they retrieve them. 😳 I don’t think my dog would leave them on.

Whisky loves wearing his. I think he is really comfortable with them on and realizes the amount of protection they provide while he is blasting through all sorts of cover.
