USMC

Thinking of going out on Saturday. Just cant decide wether to go for pheasants or quail!

Anyone from my neck of the woods going and want to jump in with me? Running my DD and my GSP.

I'm going to head out saturday morning, and probably go towards Yuma. Was thinking about buying the Rooster Roundup info, but may stay away opening morning. Will be hunting alone with my lab. wouldn't mind hooking up with some others if you're around the area.

Tough choice, isn't it USMC? I don't know about you but I've got some good info on scalies this year so I'm gonna let the crowds fight among themselves and I'm heading to the wide open spaces. I originally planned on heading to the K state for long tails but with the price of their NR Licences hovering around $100 well, that will cover my gas, food and brewed beverages this weekend. Good luck in whatever you choose. Shoot straight brother. Maybe we can hook up after turkey day when the crowds thin out. Oh, thanks for your service!

Tough call there. If I were you and had quail intel, I'd probably go that route on the opener, just to avoid the carnival. Then again, the carnival is entertaining in is own way :)

I'm headed to SD this weekend. Our rancher buddy said in August it was the least birds he can remember. We are hopeful that the late hatch happened (as has been reported nearby his place) and he wasn't seeing the little puffballs yet. In any event, he hadn't been to his cattail sloughs much and that's where we make the most hay.

Will be out here in CO the weekend following. My nephew's buddy has a new Griffon pup, so if you see a very, very large man griping at a small dog and 2 other dudes looking the other way smirking, that might be us.

We'll be heading out Friday to Yuma. 5 guys and 2 really good dogs. We will be hunting mostly private so we can stay away from most of the crowds.

We will be off to Kansas.. We’ll hunt hard in the morning and go out later after the crowds thin out. Might even slip across the CO border and chase bobwhites.
I think the cooler weather will help everybody. Saw quite a few birds on my way back from Nebraska.
Good luck all!! Shoot straight!

Prob gonna try the Southeast corner of the state... It is a lot closer to me than the Northeast. The reports say Pheasants haven't rebounded yet, but quail are maybe better. Try the walk in there and see what happens. "Sunrise and Exercise"... I can at least count on those two :)

My 12yr old son and I are headed out to the only place I know (south of Stratton) Saturday and Sunday. I spoke to one of the landowners yesterday and he had just cut a section of corn on Monday. He said that he had never seen so many Pheasants as he did when he cut that field. His words "if there was one there was 200 boiling out of that corn". I am pumped!! I have never hunted opening day before so I will probably only hit the private land depending on what everything looks like.

Hello all! New to this forum. I am planning on heading out with a couple of buddies and we've been debating on location for quite some time. This will be mine and my pups first season and have heard nothing but good news about the pheasant population this year. In saying this, I've also heard that the opening weekend for pheasant is crazy busy.
One course of action was heading out to Joes and surrounding WIA. Another course of action was staying a little closer and chasing quail around Pueblo.
What do y'all think? First "non-canned" hunt for my dog and I really want to get him into some birds.
On that note, how much time do you experts work a field before moving on to the next? Reason I ask is that I've got a pointer that is not as thorough as say a lab and based off the weather reports, the wind is supposed to be kicking on Saturday. In my limited experience, my pup has to just about be on top of a bird when its dry and windy like the forecast shows.
Thanks in advance all and we'll see you out there.

I'd avoid the crowds for a first time dog. Make no confusion, Joes will be a popular destination. Opening weekend always brings out the best folks.

Apologies in advance, but can you please expound? Is it too much shooting? Too crowded? ie. parties are almost bumping into each other?

You know your dog best. Sounds like he has been around guns. I will speak for myself, if I had a young dog I would prefer a less crowded area; at the end of the day a puppy will be a puppy and in the first year that is all you should expect. By no means would it be the end of the world if you did but just be aware of that.

I dont see any reason not to go. If you are hunting by yourself just need to find empty fields. Of course "virgin" fieds are great but but birds move and get pushed so yiu never know.

Only advice i would say with a new dog is be careful if you team up with other groups. (I do a lot) Almost always even a bad dog is better than no dog in a group... with two excwptions... 1 is if they fight with other dogs or play too mich and distract the hunters. 2 is if the dog runs out ahead and flushes birds out of range. If you can trust your dog not to do those things i think letting her experience the hunt is a great thing.

I usually carry a leash in my vest if i have a new young dog, just in case she does either of those things, so i can put her on it and walk her with me so she doesnt mess up others.

Then again... sometimes im a terrible hunter and dog trainer so maybe dont listen to me:)

Ahh, okay. That makes sense. I'm keeping my expectations to a minimum. This way, he'll exceed them every time. LOL.

I'm planning on hunting with a couple of guys. I don't think my dog is ready for hunting with others yet cause I don't think he'll honor other points. He might. But it's a thing that takes a little practice is my understanding. He's solid by himself and if he hunted with other dogs, that don't honor his point he might start busting birds out of competition. IDK. Hard to tell unless you expose a dog to it.
Good advice on leash. I was planning on a check cord anyways cause I'm still working on his steadiness to shot. He holds through shot and marks birds without me releasing him about 75% of the time.
My dog usually doesn't play tickle butt with other dogs if he's working. He could care less about anything else but the task at hand. Also, he's very submissive to other dogs so I know I won't have that issue.
Would love to get him with anther dog or two and see how he does some time.

will be in the Stratton area hunting with 4 brittanys b in a silver chevy pick up good luck to you and your son

Plans on Saturday thwart any opening day hunts.

I may head out Sunday, but I'm a dogless solo hunter. I hit some fields at the end of last season with no success. I would hate to get out there and screw up some fields for people that know what they are doing.
Besides, I may go for Duskies one last time this year.

Well,

I am going to chase quail in Southeast Colorado with my two salty dogs.... Them blues run more than pheasants!

The opening day pheasant crowds are usually full of hunters that go once a year. So usual hunting etiquette goes out the window.... Its still fun if you get the chance to go!

Good luck to everyone and be safe out there!
