Me and Setternut ventured out into the extreme cold in NC KS. With ice on my eye lashes and eye brows we pushed on in search of some roosters. We saw tons of tracks in the snow but judging by the distance between foot prints they were in full stride running away from us. We put 2 roosters in the air just on the edge of gun range, but our pheasant hunt quickly turned into a great quail hunt with 5 coveys found. 1 covey did not offer any shots as they flushed onto ground we could not hunt. Had some might fine dog work on the others even though scenting conditions were actually pretty tough. You would think with all that snow on the ground it would help, but that ultra cold air was dry!

Had a good time. Wish we had seen more pheasants. We certainly saw tracks everywhere!

I hunted Saturday morning... that wind had a bit of bite to it. I am sure Ox missed birds with the artic cold dry air blowing so strongly. But we still managed to find a few.

What do you consider NC Kansas

I have seen the term NC Kansas and would like your definition. Looking at the WIHA map, I would say geographically, NC to be 5-8 and 17-20. For quail, could I narrow it down to 6 and 7 or go south. I have two setters and would love to get my new pup (14 months old) onto some quail, or at least run her in quail cover.

Thanks for the posts, loved the picture of the setter in the truck, looks like my older one.

Guys say NC so they don't have to give exact map pages I'd guess???

Gotta look at a KS find top of state & then middle of state down maybe 2 pages south in atlas... NC pretty ez to locate

I don't even like to say the county. Because most counties only have 15-20 WIHA spots, if that. Pretty easy to figure out where you're hunting, unless you're on private land.

Exactly.... Even less WIHA per county come spring turkey guys still ask & tell???

Happy safe hunting the rest of season... & happy holidays...
