My first attempt at posting a photo, so hopefully this works...

My 8mo Yellow Pointing Lab Molly nailing a chukar at Steel Fork Pheasants a couple of weeks ago. I think she's getting the hang of it :)

God job with the pic to.

It's always good to have you guys get the pics going.

Was this a put and take Place???

Yes. Steel Fork has pheasants, chukar and quail and over 10,000 acres to hunt. Strong flying birds and the closest thing I have found to wild.

Nice point. Was this a put and take Place???:)

Yes, this was at Steel Fork Pheasants which is about 40 miles east of Colorado Springs. I joined several weeks ago, when it became apparent that this was not the year to start a new dog on wild birds in Colorado :( We've been hunting pheasants, quail, and chukar there most weekends since Jan.1.

She has good pointing lab genetics, but had mostly flushed birds previously. All the sudden a couple of weeks ago, she just started pointing birds out of the blue. She will flush the birds if I give her a "go get 'em", but otherwise she is steady until I flush them. She has a great nose as well, and is figuring out how to cover a field efficiently. Now I'm trying to decide if I should do the hunt test thing, or just let her hunt...

I really like the place duk, mostly because of the no pressure, no attitude, family style atmosphere. Rodney & Rhonda are great. Lot's of great cover, and yes strong flying birds - as close to wild as I've seen.

Hit me up when you're heading down there sometime. Always good to meet up with new folks

FBF if you are thinking of running a hunt test, you should come to Cabela's in Lone Tree on Saturday at 9:00 am. Rocky Mountain Pointing Lab club is meeting there and setting up our training schedule for the year. It is great if you want to try hunt tests or just pick the brains of a bunch of good guys that have been training dogs for awhile. I joined the club last year and I have learned so much working with these guys.

Yep, I'll be there. I have been in contact with Vic from RMPLC, and he suggested I stop by the meeting. Maybe I'll se you there.

Nice looking pup. Sounds like you got yourself a good one. Don't screw her up!

I've got one from Mike Lankas too. They aren't as common at the APLA trials as labs from some of the other breeders because Lankas doesn't run APLA trials, but they will get the job done nonetheless. Here's mine:

Here's another photo of mine from the last weekend of pheasant season with two of Colorado's most endangered species:

DPF - great looking pictures!

I'm heading down to Steel Fork in the morning to work the dog. Anyone else going to be there?

Good looking dog. That's one of the reasons I chose Lankas. I didn't want a dog that could run trials. I wanted a dog that could hunt and be a good family member.

Well I got all that and then some, but now the APLA thing is starting to intrigue me. Joined the Rocky Mountain Pointing Lab Club, and I'm heading out to their training day to tomorrow. Still not sold on testing/titles/etc., but we'll see.

I was hoping to, but I got stuck working in Houston this week and I didn't get back until late last night. Did some backyard obedience work and took a long walk instead.

I don't think there's anything wrong with hunt tests as long as you accept them for what they are. Pointing a few pen-raised chukars over 15-30 minutes certainly is not as challenging as chasing wild roosters all day. The best thing about hunt tests is that they make you get off your butt in the offseason and do some training. I think you'll enjoy it. Mine got a CPR when she was young, but I haven't pushed it any further because her heat cycles always come at the same time as the spring/fall APLA tests. Good luck!

I was up at Julie Knutson place with the RMPLA folks this past Sunday training. Good day for it. I love the point on your girl!!

My yellow lab male, Remi, got his CPR last August in Cheyenne. He will be two yrs old the end of May. Myself and a buddy have looked at joining Steel Forks, especially for the training.

I have had labs since 1992, but mainly flushers. I got a pointing lab(Remi) in 2012 and started looking at the APLA stuff last year. I still like to do hunt tests and such in the off-season for a hobby and to keep the dog in shape for hunting season.

I realize it isn't for everyone, however there are some good people to hang out with and something to do besides honey do chores

If you would have asked me say 10 years ago about a pointing lab I would have told you, whatever:p

Again, nice point, pretty yellow girl....I love yellow dogs;)
