In mid-December I'll be making my annual trip to the great state of KS. We will be staying in Trego Co. and focusing on quail, pheasant, and waterfowl, which we did well enough last year to go back again. I have hopes of at least seeing a prairie chicken, but taking one would be even better.

I was following another thread on this site, which lead me to do some research. Do any locals or experienced KS hunters think that it's worth taking a day and driving to Morton County and hunting the grasslands in hopes of at least seeing a prairie chicken and possibly getting a bonus scaled quail. We will be hunting for six days, so I don't mind the drive, but would rather not if it's unlikely we will get a chance at taking anything different than I can take in NC/NW KS. Thanks in advance for the advice.

I think you've got a better chance of taking a chicken (greater of course) in the NC region. Only lessers in Morton county and I don't think there are as many.
 
I think you have a better shot of getting into lesser chickens farther north. I hunt the grasslands lot and I might kick up 2-4 chickens all year. I think the blue quail are coming back after the blizzard a couple of years ago. I've seen some nice sized coveys, around 15-30 bird covies. But, we aren't over run yet with quail. Hopefully one more year.

I will second that about the rattlesnakes. We have killed four in the last three weeks, with my hired hand killing the last one on Sunday(November 1st).

I would not recommend Cimarron National Grasslands to most hunters. It is over 100,000 acres, not all contiguous. It is a rugged hunt and hunter and dog must be prepared. It is no walk in the park. Just MHO.

Thats why I love it. New things to find and most hunters won't get 200 yards from their truck.

I too like to hunt the grasslands. It has been a few years now, but I want to be back out there this season. Might just see you there.
