I just got from Ness City yesterday. I hunted 5 days and shot 10 birds. I was hunting until about 1 each day and then stopping, as I was hunting my 1 year old pups and didn't want to run them in the ground. I hunted my farm in Finney County, and that is where I saw the most birds. I shot 3 roosters and 5 quail over there and the rest of them within 15 miles of Ness.
I did find quite a few hens in some spots. The last 2 places I hunted I saw around 10 to 12 hens each place. Some places I didn't see any hens. I think they tend to bunch up more than roosters when the weather is as nice as it was. So you can hunt a place and not see any, then hunt just down the road and see all the hens around in one bunch. I saw pheasants every place I hunted except one.
I'm going out with a friend the 26th for a few days. I will try to get some pics of my pups. I didn't take any of them pointing this time, because I want to be ready if a bird gets up to shoot it. Also my cell phone takes crappy pics. I'm getting a new digital camera to take out next the next trip. They did point 6 of the ten and retrieved them all. A couple are tore up pretty good from them fighting over the bird.
I guess I did shoot one bird in Marion county on the way out. I stopped and hunted a patch of WIHA so the pups could run. I saw 2 roosters and half a dozen hens or so there.
