Young City Dog

So I decided to try my luck out east this weekend and a friends came along with his Lab/Boxer mix. The dog is just over a year and they got him from a shelter and we decided to see how he would do.

I guess he has been raised just in the city because he didnt really know what to do when we got out there in the tall grass. He refused to go out in front and search unless he could see over the grass. He would actually walk right behind my heels when we would go through tall grass. But we ended up working with what we had and as we walked 30ft apart we would call him back and forth between us. It seemed he didnt really know what he was looking for until we got lucky and he scared one up after we walked right by it lol but even after that it was still hit and miss depending on the grass. Although he seemed to like the one we did get.

So my question to yall veteran dog guys is how could we over come that fear with him?

ps. Im stationed in Colorado Springs and if anyone wants an extra hunter and im off i would be glad to join yall

I wouldn't say the dog is afraid of anything by the sounds of it......he was just probably wondering WTF are we doing out here.....this sure is new to me and I have no idea what these guys are epecting me to do. with that said. get him out and walk him around any local fields that you may have, or cover that would resemble what you might hunt, just walk him around and check things out on his own. what you put him through would be equal to throwing you into a completely foreign work environment and expect you to produce at a high level and you kind of going back and forth like "wtf". Calling him back and forth at least got him moving around a bit, alot of patience in that situation helps also, because alot of dogs can sense the frustration or anger the owner has and will completely give up and that trauma could ruin a dog for a good while. keep it fun, keep it fun, and keep it fun...then you all have a good time. good luck

ya that makes sense, its just tough cuz you cant tell a dog "hey we are going to go out into that field and look for this bird..." lol it was just a different reaction from a bird dogs

we didnt get frustrated with him, it was his first time out and like you said he just didnt understand what we wanted from him yet. I didnt expect anything from him and he did better then i thought he would. It was good later in the day as he was figuring things out as soon as we would stop even when he was tired he would be ready and jump out of the truck.

I wana get a GSP, but Im a single soldier so i cant really get one for awhile

thanks
