wing hiding ???

I walk my Britt daily and often hang a bird wing on a tree branch when he is away from the area. When we come back through that area on return he finds the wing and returns it to me.

Is this an unwise practice practice? Is there any harm being done?

As you can see I am a novice and this is probably a silly question.

A possible next step in his development might be hiding a wing in the weeds and give him a command - "dead bird." Make is easy for him at first, but I feel it's a good idea to associate the find with a command.

Gradually he'll get excited whenever you call "dead bird." I'm assuming here, you are training him for hunting...

Good Luck!

Can he see the wing? Hiding it in the weeds makes him use his nose.

My britt pup has a killer nose for baseballs, softballs and hockey pucks.......didn't realize the kid had lost so many........she does a good jobs on dead birds too I just use the same terms for everything........if I could only get her to train my teenager to find his stuff as well as she does.......

Is there any harm in it? Probably not. Is there anything being gained from it from a training perspective, probably not much, especially if he is finding it by sight. Right now I would be focusing on getting your pup on live birds. How old is your pup?

I am curious as to what some of the more experienced trainers will say on this as well. I did lots of this with my gsp. I just had her out 2 times this past weekend planting wings for her.

I work with her on many things while doing this though. We work on "heel" and "come" and "release". She gets exposure to the shock collar and I am bell conditioning her now. Yesterday I planted numerous wings in a fence row (with scent) and we hunted the fence row from down wind. I wanted to work her on holding when she get the first whiff of scent. I know I need to get her on more live birds ASAP, but right now this is all I got and it seems to work well. There is no replacement for live birds, but I would think this is better than nothing.

I use pheasant wings and put a little grouse scent on them. We dont have wild pheasants here in VA so she will mostly hunt grouse. This is really the only time she gets a good smell of grouse unless we hunting.

Here is some pics from this weekend:

A couple times, she has went on point while I was letting her run big. To my surprise, every time she will stay steady until I can get there. I have a preserve hunt this weekend so we will see where she is...

chewie? She's gonna be perfect.

or not. :)

Live bird scent is perfume and one that flaps and cackles and leaps in the air and beats the air furiously to gain height and distance is a whole new thing to the pup. She may break or try and catch it.

Relax. Is puppy. :)

If she locks up on a bird and you are so inclined, you might put your hand on her back and push her gently to the bird. She will resist being moved. It's SO COOL.

You're going to be soooo happy.

have fun.

Thanks kismet. To me, she already is perfect. Unless I come home to this anymore...

I am already very pleased with her now. I continue to work with her and am amazed at how fast of a learner she is. I have high aspirations for this off season. This is my first bird dog, but I am hooked.

If you are absolutely sure you want to get rid of her, I can give her a good home.

wing finding ,answers

Thanks for the information on my original post.
to questions:
My Britt. (Zippy) is not sight finding the wings,he is head high using his nose.
I have watched as he catches the scent crosswind,10 to 20 yards away.
When he starts searching I tell him "dead bird".
We play the same game in the basement ....I put him behind a closed door....hide a feathered bumper/ completely covered or under a chair/ give the dead bird command.
In the field he has pointed, held steady for me to flush....(with preserve birds)
I guess perhaps I should go easy on the wing I don't want to mess up the pointing.
I hope the extra information helps.I am really a first time trainer with a 2 year old rescue.

THANKS

Dottie, you're doing fine. Your attention and training are stimulating the pup and making the scents and actions fun for it.

Relax now, it's all going very well.

Nice work. It's supposed to be fun for you, as well.

if you can find some pigeons that's the next step I wouldn't overdo the wings

chewi one of my pointers named freckles chewed up 4000.00 worth of leather couches and chairs one night.....Mrs bobman wasn't impressed she doesn't call her freckles she's now referred to as the FFNN dog lol

Im starting to look into trapping some pigeons now. My fiance is the same way with my dog, except in the mornings when she hollers for her to jump up in the bed and they sleep till 9:00...then she likes her!

Absolutely beautiful pooch... love the liver patches! Regardless of your feelings about leaving it out when you're gone, don't! :D Our 6 1/2 yr old GSP is an absolute sweetheart and hasn't chewed a thing since 10 months. BUT she did manage to nibble/destroy a few things before I wised up. She's free to run most of the house now 100% of the time but I didn't trust her a bit her first 12-18 months (always having an imagine stuck in my head like your couch-ours didn't go that far but managed to do that to a foot stool). I have a pup coming home in a month... I won't make that mistake again (or I'll try not to). I'm dreading the first few months with a pup again... but it's part of the game we get through to make a great hunting partner in the field and home. Best wishes!! Keep posting pics... ;)
