WIA Cover

I wanted to get out hunting thsisweekend but am afraid that I will spend countless areas driving from WIA to WIA that lack proper cover for hunting. What % of WIAs would you say have sufficient cover to hold birds? Any specific areas anyone would recommend? Not looking for any honey holes...just don't want to waste time driving from one mowed field to another. Just to bring out the pup in some good cover and get a nice hunt in.

Looking to Hunt near Brush or Sterling.

Actually, I personally did not see any WIA areas mowed. Some had poorer cover than years past. Also, most of the WIA that I personally walked, the cover was just fine, there were just no birds for me:(

Please do not take this the wrong way or get offended, however when I first got onto this forum I posted the same exact post. I was flamed like you would not believe.

I can only tell you that if you have a young pup and are looking for good WIA's most guys will tell you to do the "work" and scout or go to a bird farm that has good cover with birds and work your pup there.

I would also try to get with some guys on this forum and hunt with them. ;)

I am not saying you are doing this, however alot of guys get onto this forum and others trolling for places. I have no idea about any WIA's around Brush or Sterling, I have never hunted around there.

Whatever you find, good luck hunting and with your pup.

:D...yep...no exacts from me! ...I will tell you I was NOT in the Brush or Sterling area. I was at some of my honey holes from years past and saw so few birds!

Good advice too, I am rewarding my dog's(one new pup) hard work last weekend, with a Auer Bird Valley preserve hunt this Saturday!

They deserve it too!...I am imagining they put nearly 45-50 miles on their paws last weekend and only flushed two birds (both hens) and only got birdy a few times, so this weekend, they are getting a couple mouths full of feathers!

I would like to think that folks are more friendly than to give someone a bad time for trying to find places to run their dog. One does not have to give up there honey holes to steer a fellow hunter in a good direction. We have enough things working against us as hunters we need to stick together and help each other out when we can.

It sounds like it is going to be a tough year no matter where you go. I am trying to work a young Wirehair and with so few birds around it is rough trying to get him some experience. I plan to take him up to A+ Gamebirds to work him where I know there will be birds. A little expensive bit good for the dog to get on some birds.

God luck with your season.

Another option that is really close is colorado wingsport. Jason has a website with all his info at www.coloradowingsport.com. It is located just east of I25 & hwy 7. Good cover and good birds. This is how my dog will spend most pheasant days as well. I put almost 700 miles on my VW looking at WIAs and honestly only found about 4 fields holding a decent number of birds in the four counties I covered. On the upside ducks and geese are on fire. Just hope my dog doesn't forget how to point as well.
