The Colorado Division of Wildlife has decided to charge you for a Habitat stamp even though you do not draw a big game license!!! The $10 dollar fee along with your App fee is not refunded when you do not draw. I can understand the App fee of $3 bucks, but why charge a person for the Habitat Stamp when the are not going to hunt!!!!! It made perfect sense last year when you had to get the Stamp after you drew a tag!!!!! Find this ridiculous!!!!! So you Out of staters can call the DOW and thank them. If you put in for multiple tags, you still need to include the $10 for every tag, but they will refund your money for the 2nd , 3rd and so on Habitat stamp money as you need only one!!! The easiest thing to do is go online and buy the $10 Habitat stamp and then not have to send in $10 bucks extra for every tag you put in for!!! Good luck!!!:confused:

blue i'm sure that just like all the SMART decisions in kansas some really SMART government official thought of this all on his own

Washington is doing basically the same thing. They are doing it for the money, with all the budget cuts they are short of money. Lord forbid, to ask them to live within their budget like we have to. They all waste money but the schools here are the worst..........Bob

It should be seen as a great idea for those of you on this forum who think that the merger of the DOW and state parks is a wonderful idea. Because now the DOW can give more of our money to the state parks system if this bill passes that is to be voted on within the next 2 weeks. The state park system is broke so Hickenlooper wants to fund it with DOW money. What a stupid idea. Just raise park fees again. Heck a year pass cost $80. Why not raise it to $100. If I buy a fishing license, small game license, elk tag, mule deer tag, and a pronghorn tag my bill is approximately $160. And I forgot a turkey tag so the total is now $185. And I can't even enjoy this for a whole year like park goers can. My seasons are a week except turkey and small game.

While out pheasant hunting near Sterling this season, I planned to spend the night in my camper at North Sterling State Park.
When I arrived, I discovered that it would cost $27.00 to spend the night there, and most of the amenities were closed...ie., showers, restrooms.
I turned around an went over to Tamarac Ranch SWA where I could camp for free.
Colorado State Parks are over-built and over priced...I have decided to go elsewhere to recreate...It's getting to where I can't afford to use the parks.
I don't mind paying to use the parks, but $27.00 is way too steep in my opinion...since I retired, I just can't afford that much.

Heck $27 is cheap and you get a soft comfy place to sleep. Here in Alaska, you can hike 5 miles into the wilds and the Park Service charges $65 to stay in a cabin that includes plywood bunkbeds (no pads) with no firewood. At least we only pay for a general hunting license and all of our tags are free (drawing tags cost $5). Think I paid $60 total for my hunting/trapping/fishing license.

If you think this money is going for parks and rec, think again,
It is going to pay for the biggest government debt and that is all the pensions and retirement of the government workers..... that is mainly why the gov is upside down, Wisconsin did the right thing breaking the unions, the only way the state can get out of this is file bankrupcy,,, but they cant it is not allowed,, also by 2018 all you taxpayers will be chipping in around 23 % to cover the cost so those retired Government folks keep on getting there money......

You might think $27 / night for a place to park my camper over night is cheap...I really don't. At that price I think we are excluding a lot of the public who can't quite afford that much for a campsite.

In agree that Wisconsin did the right thing.
There are plenty of other places that we need to get a handle on spending too at the state and federal level.
Nothing should be off the table when it comes to spending cuts.
Gov't. is a bloated monster that's destroying our freedom and way of life through poor fiscal management and increasing intrusion, regulation, user fees and taxes.
If we don't stand up and get a grip on it now, everything Americans have worked and sacrificed blood and treasure for will be gone.

I hate to sound cynical, but if you can't afford a twenty dollar bill for camping, then maybe you shouldn't be camping. You probably pay 3x that for fuel running out to the fields and back home. Sorry for saying that, but hunting is not an inexpensive hobby.
As far as money going to the government, you're preaching to the choir. If I stated my opinion on this government, out of control unions and government "hand-out" assistance, I'd have the FBI sitting in my driveway. At least I live in a Republican state where we have a budget surplus, and don't pay any sales or income taxes.

It's closer to a $30 bill than a $20. Perhaps if I didn't pay income or sales tax I'd have the money...not to mention those cheap tags you bragged on in a previous post. Too late about sounding cynical...not sure why you'd have the attitude you do towards a retiree living on a fixed income who loves to hunt and laments the rising costs imposed by the government you roundly criticized above.
User fees are nothing but a tax, and they have increased just like everything else the bloated government is doing.

Everybody on this Forum is on a "Fixed" income, just that my "fixed" income is probably alot more than yours. When I go to Mexico every year on vacation, I save my pennies. If you want to camp on a State camping area and $27 is breaking the bank, then put away a measly $2.50 per month. Thats one cup of coffee at Denny's, 1/2 a gallon of gas, 3 weekend copies of the Denver Post....etc. I'm sorry if I offended you, but we all have a budget (except Obama and the Democraps) and if we want something outside our budget, we need to save up. I pay non-resident fees and airfare to hunt your great state and could raise cain that I pay $350 for that deer license and $600+ for airfare, but what is that going to do and who is going to listen. I'm not your financial advisor and I'm done looking at this thread. Good hunting to you this fall and good luck on your camping ventures. If you ever make it up to Alaska, send me a PM and I'll happy to take you out on my boat for some halibut/salmon fishing. :)

Homeradam doesn't have a clue.... not sure why he kept badgering me here... if I hadn't learned to save money and budget wisely, I wouldn't have been able to retire, let alone have money for travelling and hunting trips. Anyway, I still think $27 is kinda steep for one night in a state park campground in winter when none of the amenities are working and I really don't want to see the CDOW and State parks merge...not a good idea.
I don't think it's a good idea for CDOW to charge for a habitat stamp if you don't draw a tag either...doesn't seem fair to charge for a stamp that you don't get a chance to use...they should refund the money when you are not successful in the draw.

I can't agree more!!! Yes we do have a say!!!! I have called them 3 times and wrote e-mails to the commission and sent e-mail to my friends and they will do the same!!! I guess they can ignore us for awhile until they get sick of hearing from us all and change some things!!!! Maybe if we all did it they would change it sooner!!!

It makes no sense in a year where the DOW is spending their $300,000 dollar advertising budget to recruit more out of state hunters for big game. The reason is , they lost over 53,000 Out of Staters in 5 years. Maybe they should look at the real reason why they lost these hunters!!!!!!!!

I don't think they have a clue on many things as the unit I hunt elk in they allow 1000 archery hunters to draw but for rifle only let 200. Letting 1000 hunters into a single unit for the same season is insane. Has to be they need the $$ pretty badly I suspect. Makes for some pretty poor and crowded hunting during archery season.

I hear ya!!!! What I can't figure out , just yet, is why they cancel the walk in stamp, " for people who actually use the ground" and then stick it to mostly out of staters on the Habitat stamp when some will not even hunt????!!!!!!!! I smell a BIG RAT!!!!:eek::eek:
