Whats Needed

The big problems facing Iowa bird hunters right now are low bird #'s and access to birds. SD,KS,NE, and ND (plots) have walk in areas and alot more public hunting ground than Iowa. How do we go about creating more public ground so more Iowans can enjoy good pheasant hunting? How much public ground could we have bought from 1985-present if all CRP payments had been diverted to public land aquistion? (Buying up marginal ground or wet lands)

Last week I got a survey for the DNR. It talked about how they were looking into creating a walk-in program. It sounded promising.

What's needed you ask? End the 51 cent per gallon subsidy on corn ethanol, roughly $1.53 per bushel, and allow the import of less expensive sugar cane ethanol from Brazil.

The problem with this is that Iowa farm land is just too darn valueable for the most part. In northern IA anyway, and it seems to be the same for a good portion of the state. however a few of the farms I grew up knowing the folks at are now converted into public land. This has happened in the last 10 years. So They are starting to do some. Land in our region has been selling for 5,000 an acre so it makes the dollar not stretch as far. Also around Nth central IA there is hardly any low or marginal land to snap up. And the few there are have a family that hunts some so they do not want to part with it. Not sure how they paid for the ones the DNR aquired there, but they had to do a ton of work to it to get water to stay, and convert it into that kinda low marginal type of land that bodes well for game. It definately turned out first class though.

FCSpinger you would would be surprised at how much water would be around by just cutting off a few drainage tile.
