What part of the state should I plan my trip?

Hi Everyone.

I think I might try to get a trip out towards better pheasant populations this winter. I'll have my own dog for the first time. I live in the Kansas City area and I wanted to know at what point the Pheasant population really starts to take off. I would like to try to stay as close to KC as possible although I realize I will probably have to go to at least central KS. Any county suggestions? Maybe something off of I-70?

I appreciate any input. I've never shot a pheasant before... only quail. Also if there are any suggestions for areas that have good quail populations that might be farther towards KC that would be appreciated. I will obviously be hunting the public walk-ins only.

There is so much information contained in old threads that will answer this question very well. The short answer is get past Salina and go N or S. You will run into birds at some point. The further you go the better you'll do until you've reached the last few tiers of counties in extreme W KS. There are decent pheasant populations (where you can see 10-20 in a day's worth of hunting) as close as Junction City. If you want to see 50 birds in a day, you really need to get past Salina. No matter where you go, I think you'd do better getting a ways away from I-70 for obvious reasons when hunting public land.

If you find decent quail hunting anywhere, send me a pm and I'll give you more specific information;)

what kind of dog did you get for your first time? i like hunting quail at hillsdale and a few other close by spots here close to kc but for good pheas hunting 4 hours west is a must!

We picked up our Vizsla this Monday. She is probably close to 8 weeks old right now and very cute to say the least.

I played with her last night and got her to kinda do the slow stock/point on her teddy bear she plays with. Hopefully I can make a hunter out of her.

Think the Roosters might be a little big and mean for a pup like that?

I'll have to see at that point how aggressive she is... good consideration though.

its not that its a cagey rooster will be constantly running never staying put and a young dog will 1 want to take it out 2 it will not gain confidence or will lose confidence 3 its just hard on them the 1st year anyway i wouldnt do that to a first year dog quail is what you want to put your dog on AND LOTS OF THEM! maybe other members on hear can explain better than me.

What part of KS would be best for quail? Maybe I should reconsider the location of my winter trip. I'll probably try to do some quail hunting on private land in Missouri too.

anywher for quail. but if you were going out west with friends who have other dogs do it dont let me discourage you one thing i liked to do when i did have a young dog when out west was leave the dog in the box and when you did jump a covey of quail go back and get your dog and just work them quail like no other thats what makes a bird dog sooner or later the light bulb turns on but you have to have patience stay with them birds dont give up sooner or later they will even call to each other then lead your dog in there

You also might want to think about going to preserve to get the dog some guaranteed experience. If you are wanting to just put your dog on some birds and have them work on just pointing a bird and making some retrieves there are some places close to KC. The first one that comes to mind is in Baldwin City just east of Lawrence off of K-10. This is a lot cheaper in the long run that heading out west and paying for fuel, food, and lodging. On the other hand there is nothing like putting in a full day in the field and hunting wild birds out west.
