I'm with Jim, Chokecherry, very bird friendly.

Thanks guys. Looks like chokecherry. I planted several hundred chokecherries this year. This property has a few small thickets of these. Knowing the history of this property I would say that nothing has been introduced in the past fifty years, so these may be native that have been there for a long time. I see they need full sun and there are trees around them, so will get the chainsaw out and remove some overstory.

Choke Cherries are native (MN, Dakotas, MT) anyway. Very tough plants even drought resistant. Western ND and Eastern MT they grow mainly in coulees but in full sun and usually bare a lot of fruit. (think Sharptails) Seedy, bitter berries, birds love and you can make some dang good jelly out of Choke Cherry.
