while on our recent pheasant hunt in SD doing some late evening scouting in unfamiliar territory near chamberlain, we got buzzed by a group of birds out of a that flushed out of a grass field near the gravel road we were driving. when they were briefly flying beside the truck, they all had appeared similar colorings. Once they got out in front, we could only see their silhouettes and they all looked like flying bowling pins. i'm pretty confident they were not hen pheasants.

what other birds look like a bowling pin with wings?

thanks in advance.

very similar shape, but i didnt notice any colored markings on the face, since they flew by in a flash. it was about 8-10 birds together.

they were about the size of a small hen pheasant.
That is a photo of a prairie chicken, so if they looked like that, it could have been what you saw. I know what you mean about not seeing coloring around sunset. You might be able to find some videos online of flushes or them flying in groups. The females won't have the orange/yellow coloring.

Others know infinitely more about prairie chickens than me, so hopefully someone else can chime in.
