Warm Kansas Opener

For now the weather forecast for the Saturday opener is warm, low 70s. It's shaping up as a tough opener.

Low 70's! uggg!!! Sounds like better motorcycle riding weather than bird hunting. Thats still 10 days out though. I have faith the weather forecasters are wrong. :D

I hope they are wrong too. Yesterday the forecast called for rain in Hill City on opening eve. Now that's no longer part of the forecast, so who knows.

Yeah i dont think they know anything at all...i looked a couple days ago at the forecast for opening weekend for jewell county and they were calling for freezing rain sleet and snow and a high of 38...two days ago i checked and it was sunny and 68...yesterday i looked and it said 72 with severe weather lol..lets just hope all those forecasting the low bird numbers and lack of cover are as wrong as the weatherman lol...but really doesnt matter what the weather or cover or birds are..the important thing is having fun and making memories with family and friends

63/38 where we're headed. Seems like the last several years have been a lot warmer than i remember them being years back.

No question about it, they've been warmer in recent memory than they were in my teens. It was stupid-hot when they moved the opener to the first w/e of November. I remember my thermometer in the truck reading 80 degrees:eek: I was done hunting for the w/e when I came across a snake...yes, a harmless one at that.

I'm not a big fan of hunting in the heat, but it does wonders for getting the wife and kids involved:thumbsup: The wife doesn't mind being our "taxi" service when it's 60+degrees out.

I think I'm more concerned with the lack of moisture than I am the heat. Those dry, dusty days are hard on both man and his dog(s). Those silly birds run whether it's 30 degrees or 70. The cold  is gonna taste real good in the afternoon.

It seems that most of the long range forecast is just a posting of the average high and low. I try to keep my plans flexible until a couple of weeks out.

One of my favorite weathermen was the late Harold Taft from WBAP and Channel 5 in Dallas/Fort Worth. His long range forecast was only 3 days out. His fights with station management regarding adding a 5 day forecast to his reports were legendary in the DFW area.

I am very cautious when hunting in warm weather, which for me is anything near 60 degrees. I try to hunt near a pond, lake or flowing water in addition to making sure I have plenty of water in my Quilomene vest and stop to give the dogs a drink every 15 or 20 minutes. I shut it down when the temps approach 70. Although it's not just because of the weather, I usually don't hunt opening day.

Accuweather's long range forecast (25 days) cracks me up. They'll call for rain, but the rain totals will say 0.0 for that day or they'll call for 1.13 inches or rain. Not sure how they're forecasting to the .00

They'll also call for brilliant or radiant sunshine.

I remember hunting the KS opener a few years ago. Opened on 11/1. It was HOT!!! Rattlers were out!

This opener does not sound too exciting any way you look at it.

Yeah i agree...wouldnt mind an inch or two of snow to try my new boots out in lol

Before I pass on to another Happy Hunting Ground I hope to awaken one opening day morning with four inches of fresh snow on the ground, overcast all day with high of 30, and a slight, ever shifting breeze.

From what I'm hearing and seeing on some websites is that a cold front comes through MT next Saturday and Sunday and then it gets cool in Kansas Monday or Tuesday.

Unfortunately, I'll just be piddling around locally until the second weekend of the season. So if the opening weekend weather is a bust, well, I guess that's just more birds for me in week 2!:D

It was 75 last years opener, we still layed the smack down. I think this year will be the same. I dont think weather plays that big of role, u just gotta get after them! Hunt'em hard!
