Upcoming Trip

My dad, brother, and I are planning a hunt to Kansas Dec 12-16. We have made the trip from Alabama to Kansas several years now hunting around Independence, Ark City, and last year went to Larned in hopes of finding quail and pheasant. I am considering going to the area around Lincoln and Osborne counties due to the bird forecast and the large amount of WHIA there. Any information regarding the hunting in that area as well as recommended accommodations, restaurants, etc. would be appreciated.

Thanks

I have hunted two weekends around that are this year. The quail definately seem up, but I am not sure yet about the pheasants. It has been so hot and there is still a decent amount of milo that has not been harvested. It has been alot of work so far this year to get some shots at roosters. I think it will be decent though when the crops come out and if it ever cools off. Good luck I think we will be in the area that weekend also.

do yall need another tag along i am also from alabama i have been once this year and itching to go back but i cant get anyone to go with me

I have hunted that area this year and I would hunt osborne county, especially the northern sections. If you are going to hunt Lincoln county hunt the northern sections also.

Northern Sections

Do the northern sections of those two counties offer better quality WIHAs or are they less pressured or just more conducive to pheasants?

On another note, I have been using the satellite images for the last few years to plan my trips but I never specifically looked for the area within the areas. I always end up getting to a spot I have circled and I can't remember why I ciricled it. After one of your more recent posts I am going to be more vigilant in my scouting. I have an idea on an area that fits that criteria and looks pretty good in northern Osborne county but I don't know if I am going to get back that way this year.

Thanks for the reports.

The northern sections I thought contained more birds but they both have quality areas. Use google maps to pinpoint the areas to hunt. I can tell what is crop land, crp, what kind of draws etc. by using these maps. I then print them out and label them so I know exactly were I am going and what habitat I am going to hunt. A little leg work in front of the computer can go a long way in putting birds in the bag in the field.

Thanks for all the info. It appears the weather may be decent this weekend so hopefully headed your way later this week. I appreciate the willingness of everyone to share information with those of us who do not have the opportunity to scout Kansas in person.
