underground fences

What are your thoughts on these? What kind do you have? Do they work OK? I am thinking about getting one and looking for feed back.

I work for allot of home owners and see them all the time I have seen where they work very well and not so well I think it can depend on the dog some. I know this Brittney that walks right through it and after ten feet knows the shock is over and is gone all day and returns later the same way. But I have seen dogs that will not cross the line for anything. I guess I see them work pretty darn well over all more often than not. As far as the brand I have no clue. My opinion is I would not trust my dogs to one of these because there is always a chance of some kind of failure. And I would be pretty bumed if I were to lose my dog." Chicken" I guess.

Mine works pretty good. I've yet to see a gopher burrow out of my yard.:D

Actually, I have two neighbors that have them set up. The one neighbor has two labs and the other has one lab. I've never seen any of these labs challenge the fence line. The one neighbor with the two labs won't even give it a second thought to leave the pups out without supervision at any time.

BUT on the other side. My friend set up an underground wire within the perimeter of his chain link fence. The idea was to keep the dog from running along the fence and stop her from wearing out the grass. Like FCS noted, the dog would jump past the fence anyway to get to the chain link.

City regulations might also dictate what a dog owner can do.

Well I just thought that I would give an update. I installed a Sportdog underground fence at my place in the country. My dogs liked to chase the neighbors cats and visit their garbage pit. So far it has worked great. The only time they crossed it was when I shot a rabbit in the pasture next to me and the thought of getting to retrieve something was to great. They will chase the cats right up to the line and then quit. They even flushed a pheasant out of my pine trees and did not give chase, must be the superior training they received on steady to shot . I still but them in at night because nothing good happens after the sun goes down.

As a side not Sportdog and Petsafe work on the same frequency so when I leave my dogs at my friends they honor his Petsafe fence.
