This spring I learned to stalk turkeys when they wouldn't come to calls, and it worked. I hadn't been able to scout so I began hunting in daylight. Birds were here and there but they would not come in to calls and I couldn't effectively deploy my decoys. In the evening I made one last drive around my area and saw a big tom crossing green wheat on his way to roost along the river. Spooked by my rig, he ran across the wheat into a deep narrow draw. As soon as he dropped out of sight I stopped and ran to the north end of the draw to await his advance toward the river. He didn't come. I went up the draw. No bird. I snuck a peek up the next draw over and saw him milling around in a frightened state at about 120 yards. I ducked out of sight and advanced quietly on the high ground until I thought he would be directly below me, and then rushed the edge of the draw at the ready. I guessed right and he bolted from almost directly beneath me. I got him on a right to left run toward the river. My second bird was in open pasture as I drove by. He ran for and disappeared in tall cover in a hedge row. I stopped and immediately entered the tree line with no effort at stealth and simply quick marched toward where he had disappeared about 50 yards in from the road. He bolted from his cover into the pasture when I was 20 feet away and I dropped him just as he went airborne.
