Tough but Birdy Hunting in NW

High stepping through the deep crusted snow in NW made our New Years holiday hunt challenging. Fortunately the bird population did not seem phased at all by the two 8" snows, winds, and cold temps of recent weeks and days. Some Old Weller 107 bourbon was most expeditious at the end of the cold and leg punishing days.

Hey Britt, how did the dogs fair? Did you have to boot them up? I hate that crusted snow, but after a good cocktail ,it probably felt worth every step.

Dogs Needed Boots

I have so little experience hunting in snow that I hunted my dog without boots. He should've been booted because the snow was no longer powdery. Of course, once the dog's paws are sore, it's too late to put boots on, even if the dog would let you. Now I know.

The bourbon eased the pain for sure.

From my experience even if the paws are sore go ahead and boot them up, it really saves the hunt. I always boot the dogs up the first day just to be safe. Only problem is losing them but it sure saves the dogs feet.

Do you hunt near Hill City, we were up that way and it was the worse hunting we have had in that area in 20 years.

I was in Graham and Sheridan counties. We had pretty good hunting.

Thank you for the good tips. Unless ALL the snow is new and powdery, I will boot the dog from now on. He was not happy being left behind in the crate.
