My last day for the season. Took Obie and went to an area I hadn't been to since before Thanksgiving.
First spot I think he had his first encounter with a pheasant. He would point a bit, then creep forward, point a bit and repeat until he decided that any bird not civilized enough to hold for the English wasn't worthy of being pointed.
Second spot I hunted was a great big pasture with just the right height grass for a PC to be in. Turned Obie loose and his first cast was out to about 500 yards. When he turned to circle back he went on point for a couple of seconds and up comes a chicken.
After checking back in and getting a drink he went off over the hill to the NE. Garmin buzzed me that he was on point 324 yards to the NE. I stood for a bit because I figured he was just trying to figure out which way to go to get back to me. After a minute I figured he must be on point.
Started on my way towards him and got 60 yards out and thought "he has to be within sight". Yep there he was, in a fence corner. He slowly turned his head my way as if saying "what the heck took you so long, I have some birds here that are running out into the short grass on me and your nowhere in sight". About that time a covey erupted from all around me. And of course being true to my great marksmanship for the weekend I fired 4 rounds and didn't draw a feather!
A nice way to end the season.
I hope everyones seasons will/have ended good.
Until next year Mr. Bobwhite. Here's to a perfect nesting season.
