Thoughts About The Hunt - 11/26/17

-77 degrees is too hot for Echo. I made sure she was properly hydrated and we cooled her in my truck. Given the conditions we ended the hunt early.
-My shooting continues to be eratic. Still behind my target on some shots. Missed 2 opportunities when I could not identify rooster or hen. Both were roosters. Time to visit the eye doctor.
-We hunted both public and private land. I took a rooster on public. Missed a layup on private. My hunting partner took his Colorado limit on private.
-We had a great time and I look forward to the next trip.

Another great video... Thanks for sharing.

Question for you. What velocity shotshells are you using on wild birds compared to the shotshells used at Quail Run?

Thanks man. I appreciate you watching. Edited out some of my poor identification of the pheasant sex. HeviShot Pheasant #4 velocity is 1200 FPS. I think the #7.5s that I shoot at Qual Run are 1500 FPS.

Sometimes they can be a bit tricky to identify. Easier to call out hen than make a mistake. I personally find straight away birds the hardest to identify.
Velocity changes could be a reason for sporadic misses. Less lead is needed for faster velocities compared to the longer leads of the standard 1200fps. I try sticking to 1200fps with all my shotshells. Keeps my swing and consistent lead.

I've used #5 Golden Pheasant loads at 1250 velocity for years and they work great in my Rem 1100 and my Citori. I'm sure they would work fine at a bird farm.

Probably would work great but the pet & shoots I have been to limit shot size to #6's. I use #5's on all prairie birds (I load my own). They are killers.

Interesting video - well shot and not too erratic. Some of the shots appear to be 60 yds! Good job!

Great insight and I 100% agree on the straight away shot. At 25 - 30 yards I cannot see color well, and the tail length is not obvious. I try to swing well versus lead the bird. I did not swing on the first bird.

Where abouts in Eastern Colorado are you hunting? I'm not looking for GPS coordinates, just general vicinity?
we hunt from Holyoke down to Burlington. A combination of public and private. Conditions on the land that I hunt is down compared to last year. I am walking 10m to 14m a day.

thanks man. I could include some of my decisions not to shoot because of poor identification but the video would get too long. I am shooting a lite modified Carlson Choke tube. First time. See how the season goes.

Scott Carlson makes some great chokes tubes. I use a light modified (skeet II) in both barrels of my Citori after opening day and especially for prairie chickens. Seems to hold the pattern of 1-1/4 to 1-3/8 #5's loads really well both close and farther out. I rarely ever put in Modified chokes.

My new SxS is IC and Mod(which reminds me why I like light modified) and I'm still trying to get used to. I measured them and they are correct but I think they may be a bit tight. I may send it to Briley at the end of season and get some chokes put in or just ream the left barrel....

When chasing birds I use three different shooting styles, Churchill which is just almost a point and shoot, the swing through, and sustained lead. It all depends on what is happening at the moment the bird flushes or passes by. I generally use swing through the most.

Great insight on your shooting style. I spoke with one of the Carlson family memebers and he recommend this choke for my Ethos. I am willing to learn new shooting techniques. Just like golf, success has more to do with the Indian than the arrow. I would love a crack at prairie chickens. Always see them but from a long ways away.

Will be heading out tomarow or Friday. Will move up a little farther north than last week. Will try and avoid the "pet and shoots". We need some weather, this sunny dry stuff is making my dog mad for wasting his time.

Most bird farms/kick and shoots do not allow anything bigger than #6's........I only use #5's on "wild birds"....I use #6's or #7.5's at bird farms such as SteelForks or Quail Run....

Great Video! I am using the Tru-Lock IC and LM extended chokes and they seem to be working really well for me. This year Dove season helped me get ready for the Bigger birds. Still missing my fair share though.
