We hunted the same spots two days in a row. I normally never do that but it was worth it. So Friday we saw all the cows on the back of a hillside out of the wind. We went there the next day and there was a dead one. My buddy is Mr. Johnny on the spot so he jumped the fence to investigate. The cow was still warm and had no rigor. He called the guy and the hand came out. Didn't seem too worried about it. We were wondering if it would be butchered or incinerated or whatever. Sounds like neither, just leave it for coyote bait, and maybe shoot a few song dogs over it.

I am pretty sure no one wants to eat an animal that just died of "who knows what". If it was old age (doubtful), I am not in-line for that meat either. Probably lucky that bovine didn't die from a shotgun blast, it could have spelled an ending for all hunting on the fella's property.

One of the spots I hunt about 3 times/season is owned by a dairy farmer. He dumps his dead cows/calves on one end of the area I bird hunt, out of sight near a small grove of trees. Every time I walk past it, my dog bee-lines right to the carcasses lol. She is a bottomless pit when it comes to food and probably thinks she found a gold mine. I usually have to physically grab her collar and drag her away to make her leave the "pile of beef."

Captain Obvious! Maybe some other city kid punched it....I didn't say you shot the thing, but that would have been awkward if you had. I am glad you clarified it. Maybe it was a good thing the hand didn't roll it over. Oops!

Pretty common, if it's summer and one goes down it might get dragged down wind of house. Broken leg, would probably get butchered. Depends on the farmer and insurance. Cows get hit by lightning

Yeah I was wondering how insurance works on a deal like that. And if they try to find cause of death, i.e. a disease that could spread in the herd. I'll ask relatives about it who have cattle, but probably won't see them for a few months.
