The look the dog gave me.

So this afternoon I got out around 3. Some private ground of a friend which has very little pheasant hunting directly on it. It is a mile from town so ditch hunting and all out trespass do put pressure on the birds.
Hunting by myself with just my female dog.

Started hunting a little draw that skirts a picked cornfield on 1 side and a hayfields on the other. It is a fairly deep waterway 5' or so and 20 to 100 feet wide. Some willows randomly grow more so to the edges. Well we kicked 6 or 7 roosters out wild ahead of us. Dog was birdy but the birds were along the edge and we were more to the center.

Next we hunted another swath of grass that winds thru a few old apple trees and lies between a food plots and another picked cornfield. Got a point and I downed a nice bird. Dog had a little trouble finding it as the bird tunneled about 5 yards under the dry grass. Had a second point on a hen.

On to drainage ditch which is 70 feet wide at the the top and 15 at the bottom. A dirty fence line runs along a hard grazed pasture on the 1 side. The other side has from 10 to 30 feet of grass and young willows. So dog is hunting the grass and willows i am on top of the berm. Dog stops moving i know she is on point and I get ready . Rooster flushes and the only shot I have is right at my vehicle so it gets a pass. We go another 50 yards and now I am up on the road at the end. Dog is down below me in the thick stuff that also has big trees. She stops moving I tone her collar and she is left of me so I move that way and the bird flushed and goes out to the right offering no shot.

We go down to another piece and she is trailing tracking a bird for 80 yards. She goes on point and my cell phone starts ringing. It's the guy who's land i was just on. Dog is solid so I answer the phone. Hello and away goes another rooster. Finish the call and hunt a little further when the dog approaches me and just stands there looking at me like "Hey I am doing my part what is the problem?".

With that i called it another season.

Well I have let way more roosters escape this year then any other.

The rest of the story about the dog is on weds I didn't shoot the last 3 roosters she pointed either. 2 because of safety and the 3rd because of the safety. I did shoot 4 birds over her and her brother Thursday. Friend I was hunting with that afternoon is slower at getting on birds then I am and he basically was out for a walk. We have hunted together for 45 years and he is happy to just get out because he knows he is going to eat whether we get a bird or not.

Well there you go! Sounds like you’ve been getting into quite a few birds with her overall and glad to hear about birds in the bag on Thursday. Nice reports! 👍🏼

Tell me about it with passing on birds due to safety and gun issues. Many of the roosters I got into this year flew away safely due to those two factors.
