Take About Number of Hunters!!!!

Just spent 3 days in the Hill City / Wakeeney area. I have never seen so many hunters. The walkin was pounded!!

We ended up venturing away from the roads but anything near the roads was getting walked once an hour. No kidding. We watched one piece of grass get walked 3 times in a couple hours.

The birds were jittery as a result. Seemed to be an average number of birds - similar to last year, maybe slightly less. Saw plates from all over and lots of expensive dog boxes - Arkansas, Missouri, Mississippi, Colorado, Oklahoma, etc.

Looks like the advertisement of 25 year high worked at creating some revenue for the state and small communities.

I didn't see near as many hunters in the area I hunt during the opener. I wondered if it had anything to do with the glowing forecast. Another thing to consider though is that when you look at a KS WIHA map, there sure are a lot of options all around Hill City. Graham county is just packed with WIHA. People like to go to the clusters so they have options in situations like the one you're describing.

I wonder how the pressure has been in the far SW corner?

I think another reason Hill City gets so much pressure is b/c it is just past the invisible line running N and S, marks the best pheasant range in KS (IMO). It is also right off I-70 and I know a lot of people are trying to save money on their pheasant hunting trips. Just had to add that.....

We hunted the SW corner, Garden City, and saw a few hunters. Not what I expected, although we did not hunt opening w/e but the Tues. after through Fri. am. Was expecting to stand in line to get into a walk in field, but not the case. Yeah, the birds were spooky, I'm sure from opening w/e, but still plenty of birds compared to Mich. I have always tried to go the extra and find spots that don't get pounded, but sometimes it aint there. We hunted 3 full days from daylight to dark. It's even hard to find a piece of public property in Mich. that aint pounded on opening day. Wish we had the walk ins that Kansas has. All in all was a very good trip and unfortunately wont have as good a hunt in Mich. but anytime in the field is good.
