So today i will be doing some water training with the dog. It actually does pay off drop a rooster in the water and the dog went and got it. Tomorrow is down bird training i go to a feild that i know birds r not nesting and leave the dog in the van while i go plant tail feathers because they have a stronger sent then wings because there is more fat on the tail. Then i go get the dog and we work the field with hand singels. What do you guys do for summer training?

Pretty fortunate here in Rock county there is several places to run dogs where they can swim to keep cool. Also play fetch of the deck with the hose close by.

I prefer to let my dogs learn to hunt in the fall when I have a gun not big on training in the off season as long as they stay in decent shape.

Mick (ESS) pretty much keeps himself in shape when we do field walks, or amble along the crik--depending on what crop is in rotation. In serious heat, I just curtail his ambition; dog just WANTS to explore. All my hunting dogs use the crik as a running path...will go a half mile or so, just running/swimming in chest high water.

Young Bert, the not-right dog, (GWP) was an Olympic caliber finder-of-muddy/manure-y-puddles into which to plop.

In fallow fields or pasture, I'll sometimes work him on "hup" or whistle stop-and-turn commands, and sometimes on simple come, sit, stay stuff.

But as the season approaches, the dogs and I increase our activity frequency and build into better shape. Works out ok.

I'm with wisturkeyhunter. I spend a LOT of time letting my dogs swim. They love it and it is a good physical workout for them. I do a little dummy retrieval work a few times a week, but only a few times. I don't like working/training them in the heat.

Another great training tip/trick is to take small dog biscuits or treat outside in the yard with you and the dog. Show them the treat, then throw the treat out in the grass somewhere and tell them to find it. This time of the year they get used to using their eyes and visually finding stuff. Throwing small biscuits in the grass forces them to use their nose to locate the reward.

On Monday, I will have a GSP from Michigan dropped off with me and I will be working on numerous exercises daily with the dog for the next month. I'm sure I will also take this opportunity to fine tune my dog as well and polish up on some honoring training.
Good luck with your training Remtech.

Summer Training

I like to take the dogs (3 labs) at least a few times during the summer to a game farm that has an honor system training program during the summer. They have birds available that you can take and plant in the field and work with your dog. You pay for the birds you take and release in the field. I prefer to do it early in the morning when it is cooler and there is usually more moisture on the ground. Helps the dogs two fold. The dogs love it and it keeps them in tune.

I train 2-3 days a week down at Bong... Training for UT and VGP this fall to keep me sharp for the season.

Deuce - do you know if Rice Farms has training birds yet? Also, are you allowed out on the old airstrip this early in the summer? I had thought that was closed to training most of the summer?

thanks.

I've bought from him a few times. He has Chukars & Quail. Although he may be out of one or the other depending on when you call. He leaves all the info on his voicemail.

You're allowed on the runway with a dog training license and runway pass (free with the training license). It's been open since April/May if I remember correct. Only time I've seen them close it is when it's really wet. I believe all Class 2 grounds are open year round for training.
