Would like to get my two young GSP into some Quail and Pheasant while in Manhattan mid-January, any recommendations would be greatly appreciated; will drive 2-3 hrs to get into birds.

Thank you,

Head west young man, head west. I'm sure that you can get into some birds around Junction City but I'm not sure where to be exact. There will be some fellas chiming in that are in that area that may give some better ideas. If not head west and south about 2 hours and you should get into some. Good Luck..

That's good advice from Kiotehntr. I will supplement that with my personal opinions.:D

With two young dogs, you should be able to find (a few) quail in any direction from Manhattan at most of the WIHA and public hunting at the Corps lakes.

For a better shot at both pheasants and quail, I would follow Kiotehntr's advice and go West. My personal taste is to try to avoid large blocks of windshield time and break up the hunt somewhat. I like to make big loops when I hunt. For instance, I will head N on 77, West on 9 at Waterville, and at some point, loop back down to 24 when I'm ready to start heading back home. I hit WIHA and public land, stopping every-so-often all along the loop. Just a suggestion.

When I want to target pheasants specifically, I take 24 West for a couple hours and then start my loop.

You might also consider searching some of the past threads about Ft Riley. I can't offer any advice about the fort, because I have been too busy and/or lazy to go and get the necessary permits to hunt on the fort.

Best of luck to you.

sconie, I spent many years hunting in the Juction City area, and Ft. Riley. If you want to try to hunt on the fort get you permits then get one of thier maps at any of the check in stands. Find a place called Break Neck Lake, if you find that you will find food and cover on the far south western edge of the post. But if you dont want to hunt on post I would go to Milford Lake. I've had good luck on the west side, and the far north end. If you get lost around there get on Hwy 244 going North, right at a 4-way stop on the North end of the lake there is a mom and pop store. I think it is called The General store. If they are open go and ask them for some advise and its a goo place to eat. Well good luck to you and your dogs
