Stupid Question found a dog....

I went hunting Friday and as I was driving down one of the dirt roads a yellow lab came out on to the road. There was no collar or hunting vest on the dog. I already had two dogs in the car. I wasn't sure what to do.

There was no house with in 2-3 miles. I felt bad but I just kept driving because I had no where to put him and I didn't know how he would act with my dogs. What do you guys think is this just some farmers dog wandering around? I didn't think it was a hunting dog cause he didn't have any orange on.

It was likely a local pup. Growing up in a farm town, it wasn't unusual for the dogs to wander all about. Surely things haven't changed so much in the last 25 years that this doesn't happen any more.

Even if it wasn't, how much could you have done if it didn't have a collar or any identification? You did the right thing.

Could have been a local dog. Had a GSP growing up and every now and then he would run off for hours at a time. Dad got a call once from a friend that had found him 4 miles away from the house. He always came back on his own.

Kinda figured it was a dumb question. lol Most likely a local dog that just got pretty far away from home. He looked like he was in pretty good shape.....

We had a farm dog come hunt with us lst year around Scott city. We were hunting a piece of wiha about a half mile down the road from the farmhouse, after a few shotgun blasts, he just showed up and started hunting.

The same thing has happened to me on more than one occasion. There was a place back home we'd quail hunt all the time and the owner's dog (brittany) would join us each time. The owner didn't really hunt upland, so the dog was never trained. The dog NEVER helped and was usually just pushing birds out the end, but he seemed to be enjoying himself a great deal.

On the other hand, we had another dog (another brit) that belonged to a land owner's son. The first couple of outings that this dog joined us for were dismal. After a few hunts though, he started pointing for us. However, he would pick up downed birds and run off to bury them. I never got him to bring one back.

Most of the healthy looking dogs you see running aimlessly across the countryside belong to a local. They know where they're headed and they know how to get back. Unless they appeared to be starving, I'd just pet them and send them on their way.

A dog that has gone feral will start to act more like a coyote. Run and cower away from any attempt at human contact. I once saw a nice looking GSP that must have been on his own for a good long time and when I came up on him driving down the road he ran away. When he was running he kind of did that run and peak that the 'yotes tend to do and it really appeared to have lost all of it's domestication.

It was kinda sad.

The same thing happened to my dad and myself back in Oct in the middle of Kansas. We were out for the weekend training our own pups when after going thru a field we looked back and saw a dog in the middle of the road. Drove down to him, a good looking black lab with a collar but no tags and he was skinny. Took him to the closet house 2 miles away and talked to the fella he didn't know of anyone missing a dog. Took him back to house in town (brother in law bought a hunting house out there several years ago) house is across the street from the church and we knew a couple of folks that went there. Fed the dog a couple bowls of food and when church got out went over and visited with the guys we know. They came over to see him and saw we were packing up to come back to town. One of em offered to take him and make some phone calls to try and find the owner. Then the 2 guys started to argue on who should take the dog, the guy that 1st offered stated to the other that were we found the dog it was closer to his place, the other guy countered that the other fella offered 1st. So off they went.

I didn't make it back out until the 1st of Dec. for my 1st hunt. Again we were packing up on Sunday when church got out and here come both guys. They had made several phone calls and also placed a message with the local radio station and did not find the owner. It turns out that the second fellow that did not want to take him ended up taking him and said he was great around the farm.

Went back 2 weeks ago and stopped at the fellows farm that kept the dog. He wasn't home but his wife was and I told her we were the ones that found him originally. They already had 1 black lab and they had a female that had past away a couple months ago. She told me there female always used to go down the drive and bark at the sprinkler heads and the new lab does the exact same thing and she was just in love with him. Looks like we found the right owners!
