Story CO. Early December

I am a total NOOB. With that, I am going to visit family that just moved to Ames.

I would love to be able to escape for a few hours and walk some public fields. I see there are quite a few "parks" close by.

Am I just wasting my time? I can not bring my dog this time. Might be able to enlist another family member to walk with me.

If this is a waste of time; please tell me...

I'm not from that area of the state, someone near there will probably chime in. You could hunt and explore a couple spots for the next time you visit during hunting season.

I don't think it's a waste of time, there looks to be some nice areas to hunt in Story Co. on the DNR hunting atlas. The hunting pressure for pheasants should be lower then,... BUT, it may be deer season (Dec 5-9 & 12-20) when you visit so wear lots of hunter orange.
